Cleaning materials for engine bay?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Sick Boy, Dec 10, 2013.

  1. My engine is now out in readiness for the Subaru swap. I want to clean out the engine bay - any suggestions what is the best stuff to buy to do the job. It is very oily in there.

I thought it'd be done by now. When's it going in?

  3. It's in the garage now and I will clean out the bay tomorrow. No great rush. My son is taking it away to the Peak District in January. What's good stuff to clean out the engine bay?

  4. Jizer or Gunk both readily available

No idea, I don't clean mine!
With the scooby conversion it'll get dirty quickly because there is no tinwear to shut out the road dirt.

  6. Gunk. Use the green one as it's just as good as red but kinder to the environment. Let it soak for ages then give it a high pressure wash with regular car wash soap.

  7. had to google this ....I better not post some of the urban dictionary quotes I found :D (I did spell it wrong with a double z though )

Try something less harsh initially household cif. If no good try petrol on a rag.

the o/p has no engine in so none i'd worry about. to be fair all i'd worry about is pressure washing the filler or siliconed on patches off some of the vans i've seen......

  14. some home heating oil sprayed on with a spray bottle like u would use to spray kitchen cleaner, spray it on leave for an hour then steam wash owen nw

  15. Thanks a lot for all the replies, including the titter. Baysearcher, I'm going to clean it, protect it and paint it because of the absence of tinware. Cheers John

  16. A pair of wellies and a waterproof jacket should be enough:p

  17. Or a crochet poncho! Perfect!

  18. Just as a matter of interest - all the products emphasise that you have to rinse off with loads of water. Why is this - why can't you just wipe it off with a clean cloth?
