Classic Vehicle Modifications

  1. Even that's a pain. The DVLA can't seem to get it into their heads that folk can do this without getting a "garage" involved.

If you swap your engine, tell your insurance company, but don't bother with the DVLA. They're probably all "working from home", anyway.

  2. Or, with the above in mind, pay to get a garage to either fit it, or to inspect it and write a receipt for you.

I'm all for doing work myself, but there's no piont in being stubborn about it if it is likely to create a world of pain.

  3. I wouldn't trust a "garage" to fit my engine.

  4. Well as @Soggz says, the alternative might be a very nice bay that is forced off the road, to become a very expensive summer house !

  5. I had similar waiting for an inspection for an imported J6 monkey from Japan he took a year off its age even though he could read the vin showing the year of manufacture:thumbsup:

  6. During covid the DVLA signed off most applications remotely, but they've now started to inspect again.
My scooter had no lights working, didn't even have a light switch. The rear light was an old dynamo bicycle type that I had in my garage.

  7. I wave my private parts at the DVLA.

  8. Well if plod have reason to check engine and VIN numbers, that could create another world of pain if they don't match with DVLA records.

I know it's all about probability, or lack of, but all it takes is for some div to run into the back of you.......

  9. I'm all for not telling the DVLA stuff, like who I am and where I live... :p
But seriously, an ICE -> Electric power train conversion is one of the few things they deem 'a significant modification from the original specification' and must be reported.
Failing the guy's mini for a new hole in the boot is ridiculous, but not as ridiculous as not letting a qualified engineer reverse the perceived damage and certify it as structurally sound. I mean, isn't that what they do when your metal around your seatbelt anchor points has previously rotted and been repaired? Inspect it, and yay or nay at the MOT station?

  10. That's unfortunate, as I'm about three engine numbers behind...

How many type 4 motors have matching engine numbers on the fan shroud and the case?

  13. It'll only be the case number that's relevant?

Every window on my 944 is etched with a private plate number that was only on it for a year about 35 years ago......

  14. When Swansea sent me a form saying "Describe the condition of the modified vehicle", I just wrote back "Tidy".

I reckon that's as good as anything as long as you record it. My bus has its original Soweto reg number etched on all the windows - I've written it in the front of my Haynes manual. You know, all official like.

  19. This is all totally normal for a "modified" vehicle here in Australia.
Fitting an electric motor would require an "Engineering Certicate"
Fitting a motor that is 15% larger in capacity requires an "Engineering Certicate"
    Same with a Suby conversion
Cant even fit a set of dropped spindles.

Basically everyone here knows to contact an Engineer before any modifications
Where most people fall foul is where they buy a cheap unregistered camper is say NSW, ship it to Victoria, spend a $gazillion in restoring it only to find out that a camper is a "Modified" vehicle and needs engineering.
The fact that it was engineered and registered in NSW doesnt mean it will be registerable in Victoria

My camper is over 50 years old so it’s
