Cecil - a beautiful 1972 RHD Westy in great condition

  1. I'm full of mixed emotions at the moment... on the plus side, I've secured myself a two-year visa to work and live on a beach in South Australia. On the downside, dear Cecil just won't fit in my hand luggage.

He's a great example of a '72 (registered '73 but TAX EXEMPT) RHD Westfalia Continental, with:

    In the back
    - Full width rock and roll bed
    - Fitted roof bed in the pop top
    - Sink and water tank
    - Fixed and folding shelves to outside
    - Two ring gas hob
    - Three-way fridge (brand new last year)
    - Adjustable swing table
    - Short hanging wardrobe, overhead locker
    - Mosquito nets all round

    In the front
    - Walk-through design (the hob swings up out of the way)
    - Replacement seats in cream - very comfortable!
    - After market wooden steering wheel
    - DAB radio / CD / MP3 player with AUX and USB inputs
    - Full width shelf below dash, with cup holders

    Body work
    - Recent respray - generally very solid with a few tell-tale rust bubbles in the danger zones (lower door and panel seams)
    - Front hinged pop top with colour-coordinated canvas and rear window - leak free and great condition
    - Chrome-trimmed VW spare wheel holder, chrome 'eyelids'
    - FM arial has snapped off (hence the DAB radio, which runs from a hidden internal arial)

He still has the original key that fits ignition, sliding door and tailgate.

He's been an absolute star on my recent trip around the mediterranean - we had a dashboard wiring problem at the start of the trip and were messed about by some french mechanics... but once we hit the road we hit it hard! He's been all the way up 'the highest road in Europe' deep in the French Alps, round hairpin bends and up steep climbs, and we've done mega motorway journeys through Switzerland. He starts every time and simply runs. Recently I had to leave him in Lyon airport for three weeks - I came back and he started straight away, taking a long drive to Avignon as though we'd never stopped.

He passed his MOT with flying colours back in February (before we even carried out the mechanical work above) and he got his latest free tax disc in May. I have no concerns about his future MOTs and the tax will always be free.

I've had the time of my life this year and have become very attached to my beautiful boy, but the [glow=red,2,300][glow=red,2,300][glow=red,2,300][glow=red,2,300]FACT[/glow][/glow][/glow][/glow] remains that he can't come with me and I can't just stick him in some garage to rot. He needs a new owner to love him like I have!

I'll be driving back to the UK in early September and having one last holiday with him at Bestival on the Isle of Wight before returning to my home in South Wales. Therefore, if you are based anywhere along the South of England or Wales, book me in for an appointment and we can pop over to see you for a test drive and chat.

He's covered under 'agreed value' classic car insurance with a market value of £12,000 so I'll be looking for a similar offer.

Contact Emily at cecil@emilyweb.com for details, post a comment on this thread or PM me.

  2. Lovely van - you'll have no problems selling it I imagine. You can always find another when you return...or better still bring a RHD home with you.

  3. Thank you ^-^

Is it mad to think they all have their own characters though? I hope I find another one who keeps me company like this guy ;D

  4. By the way, I am also having to sell my 'bit on the side' Smart Roadster convertible - all black in mint condition, semi-automatic, 2006 reg, 46,000 miles, full service history at Mercedes dealership, £4,750. About as different from driving a Late Bay as you can imagine! :))

  5. Terrordales

    Terrordales Nightshift

I'd bring the bay with you.

  6.
  7. Hi is he still for sale? Would like to view on the island when you are at bestival.

  8. Yes indeed! We've just arrived back in the UK and Cecil is looking for a good service in return for his hard work. He'll be at Bestival as planned and then we'll take him for viewings...

My internet access has been a bit up and down but if you email or PM me your details I'll get in touch.

  9. The first viewing is taking place this weekend in SALISBURY. We already have a number of people around Hampshire and Dorset coming to see him, but contact me if you want to squeeze in a quick visit while he's there.

Wadeiw if you're still keen I can collect you from the Gunwharf ferry port..? I'm staying with family in Portsmouth while Cecil gets his service and tidy up.

  10. Okay, I'm leaving for Australia in one week today. Purely to speed things up, I'm going to drop the price : from £12,500 (which is the agreed value) to £10,000.

And within that you get him fully loaded: awning, batteries, crockery and cookware, Haynes manual etc...

Any lower and I'd be better off putting him into paid storage! Which would be a shame for him. So fingers crossed an enthusiast (current or future) will get a bargain instead.

  11. It looks as though Cecil is going to be going into storage. The facility will continue to show him and have their own contacts to persue as well... they'll be regularly seeing to him, keeping the battery topped up and the oil warmed, and will have my instructions for selling.

I've had some detailed photo requests so I'll share them here too:
