Carb linkage advice needed

  1. Hi all
A mate of mine has a 1979 Westy that is fitted with a 1700 type 4 thats got a single centre mounted weber (I think it is anyway) that has a bit of a crap home made throttle linkage. It used to have a return spring attached to the snail fan but the fan isn't fitted anymore and I am trying to work out if I can get a better linkage sorted out. Currently the return isn't strong enough to work properly.

Here is a photo for info. Like I say all ideas welcome.

  2. I've seen folks hang a spring from the underside of the cargo deck.....
If it were me, I'd look into changing the angle of the dangle by fabbing up a bracket that mounts to the rear tin and running the cable under a pulley wheel, so that it pulls down on the throttle....

there's a device called a 'travel agent' sold by Problem Solvers...it's used for mating short pull brake levers with long pul brake arms.....maybe of use

    Bertiebot likes this.
  3. The other thing is that there appears to be way more throttle travel than much mates throttle pedal can achieve so we have plenty of things to fix. Those problem solvers look an interesting idea. Is that a common problem with these carbs on buses?

  4. You can generate more cable travel by making the link longer at the pedal end, BUT (as with mine) if you look carefully you will find that all of the slop in the stock crappy and worn out linkage will be wasting half of the pedal movement. Get a new linkage from @butty or make one up with rose joints and you will probably find that a lot of the missing travel magically appears with no further modifications needed.
