  1. Ordered a imdu from mega bug to get me by until I can get oil bath filter are they easy to fit eg do they just wrap round and then connect 2 wires

  2. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Have you got the stand for the oil bath filter in your engine bay? Or has someone previously chopped it off to fitting twin carbs?

IMDU IMO is treating the symptom rather than the cause...

  3. i have got stand and as soon as i have an oilbath filter i will be fitting it, but as i need the bus to go away in at the weekend i need a quick fix hence the imdu

    - the tank breather hose is not usually resting just above the alternator pulley, it is longer now and goes across the top of the air box on the carburettor to the air cleaner.

When I changed to a DFAV32/36 progressive carb it was pretty bad with hesitations and lurching while cold with the shiny chrome filter on top.

The other problem I had was that although the EMPI inlet manifold has preheater pipes connected, the EMPI exhaust header for my twin quiet pack does not provide the correct path for the preheat exhaust - it should come from one exhaust port and not go straight back to the opposite exhaust port . It should go via a shorter pipe to the box where the silencer is bolted on, to provide proper flow of hot gas. As done in standard exhaust.

I re - plumbed the oil bath filter, making an air box (aluminum sheet and fibreglass filler, replacing a PVC and duct tape prototype) on top of the carburettor and connecting it to the oil bath via some of the 50mm air hose. I also replaced all of the perished vacuum hoses, because I noticed that the vacuum advance wasnt happening always and the little flap which draws hot air into the air cleaner was not moving.

And it got better but ran rich. So I changed the jets in the carburettor and chopped a bit off the air intake horn on the oil bath filter (about 25mm shorter than stock so the inlet hole is about the same as on larger engines air filter) . Hesitation has much reduced, and the black marks on the rear bumper grow more slowly .

I have bought a Wideband O2 sensor and display kit (PLX) which shows graphs so I will be able to see what happens to the mixture when you floor the accelerator and it lurches.

The pipework going to the carburettor is now nicely warm and the manifold below the carburettor is no longer cold to touch after a run where the engine oil ends up about 100C .
One day I will go for a blast and then stop almost immediately and measure the temperatures.
