Car Ports - planning permission and views?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by marowak, Aug 27, 2012.

  1. I am toying with the idea of getting a car port over our drive way to give the van more shelter from the rain, but not lose the light and space we have.

I was wondering if anyone has a car port and if you needed planning permission.

I know I could investigate myself but it's always nice to get other peoples opinions.

The ones i have been looking at are about £1k but I am also interested to know if you can get kits etc.

    Ta muchly ...

We have a car port but it was built at the same time as the house, its part of the submitted plans but Major fits just great under it!

I guess a quick call to your local council planning officer would help?

Have a quick look on your local council planning site. You'll probably find you don't need planning permission.

  4. Hmmm I'm not sure as I was going down the same route for mine but mine was going to be built between two houses so I was going to use joist hangers and beams then cover over them .
I take it yours will need to be free standing on its own legs ?

Depending on where you are it normally comes down to the percentage of unbuilt land on your plot you intend to cover. From memory it's normally 50% max under permitted development rules.
If you intend to put power in you'll probably need building regs approval too.

  6. Not sure about the power bit I've ran power to sheds and all sorts , my dad has out side power points in his car port that were not there when it was build but worth looking into

Most people don't bother but if the power supply is taken from an existing building you SHOULD make a building regs application.

  8. Ow right I'll keep that in mind for when I go mine

  9. You need to make it with at least two sides open , dont go beyond anyones ( esp neighbours ) building lines , best to make it demountable too ,so if you want to build extension or dont like it ,its not prob to take down and sell on or what ever.I built mine in sections and used brick coach bolts to fix wall plate on.Got some pics if you want any ideas.

  10. ok cool ... my house is the end of a block and no neighbours on the drive side ...

i will have a look into it and then see what happens - cant afford it at all yet - but its something i want to work towards

  11. Heres a few pics of how i did mine might help?? obviously front to back fall but if you want fall from wall to side build it that way. front side view shows removeable panels high up made in panel with hole and pin to hold up but so can be taken down ,i made the carport high enough to be able to get it on ramps axle stands to work under neathwall plate legs fixed to floor with concrete coach bolt/screws . front view . Took 4 days to build .

  12. I made roll up canvas sides for if its really sheeting it down with rain but take off for summer  i mean winter ;D

shouldnt be a problem at all. norfolk council have a free service that you can send off the details to and they'll tell you yay or nay.
