Car port vs Cover vs Dry storage

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by DriftingBear, Jan 21, 2016.

  1. Thanks everyone - providing the quotes aren't too pricey it sounds like the car port with pull down tarpaulin is the way forward.

I have considered dry storage away from the house but I like to look at my camper out the window and walk past it everyday! It feels like I'm getting my money's worth then... even if I'm not driving it.

Thanks all - I'll post pics when it's done. Barney of you could take pics of yours that would be a great help, but I think I get the idea!

  2. It does also provide you dry space at home to do stuff or even load it in our summer rains :D

  3. Good decision.

  4. Sorry for slightly hijacking this thread, but is a breathable cover not worth using ? I got one last winter (from JK) when I got Ivor, but due to the mild weather so far, I've not put it on yet but now I'm wondering if I should bother. Surely some protection is better than nothing ?

They're ok but you have to remember they're not waterproof. I used one for a couple of years and it was fine so long as you open it up to blow through and dry the van on nice days.

  6. Sorry @DriftingBear been havin bit trouble with photobucket so just couple that might give more idea of canvas and type of foot i have onto drive /tarmac
[IMG] sor will put more up its locking up

  7. If you have room for a carport, you have room for a garage, why have a tarp front door when you could make it out of timber?

  8. I think there is a difference regarding planning permission - I didn't need it for a carport but would have done for a garage

  9. A temporary timber structure is the same if you put a door on it or if you put a tarp on it I would have thought???

I know you can build up to 30M squared without needing building control,

and I also know that if under 2.5M (within 1m from your boundary) is under permitted development so doesn't need planning consent.

  10. i have garage behind mine , but one its full lol 2 not high enuff n 3 need planning to raise roof ,plus tarp front cover is temporary ie can be taken down /removed so meet reg requirements as carport , i only have it on in really bad weather .

  11. Maybe it varies by the area you live in - we live in a conservation area where we can't even cut down any trees for example

  12. +1 if you have the space then surely a proper garage has to be a better bet than a car port?

at least check out what the rules are where you live. we built a garage and didn't need planning, just had to comply with the rules around where it was located and the height etc.

  13. I did consider a garage, but I would not have much room inside once walls built, and it will block light to a nearby window into the house - so going for car port with clear polycarbonate roof, with clear-ish tarp to pull down in bad weather.

    Barney - cheers for pic

  14. OK thanks everyone for spending my money.
I'm just starting collecting a million quotes for a car port.
How do you all feel about the height?
Should it be high enough to pop the dormy top or would that look mental?

  15. I'd just make it a few inches above the 'normal' roof level, so you get the throughflow of air but it doesn't look too 'spindley'.

The higher you make it the more it'll cost and the more stress on the uprights when it's windy, especially if the wind can get underneath the roof.

  17. High enough so you can jack the bus up underneath it

  18. I have been looking into a carport to go beside my garage. The bay lives in the garage and I have a beetle that I want to protect from the elements too. I am renting a garage in a block just down the road from my house but if I build a car port I will save having to pay rent!
