  1. Hi all. My son passed his driving test today, so now looking for car insurance. He is 19 and the car is a Chevrolet spark, 2010 reg and only 1 litre!! Anybody have kids around same age and can recommend any good insurance companies. Do not really want to have black box
    Anyone recommendations??

  4. A black box for the first few years will really bring the price down as long as your son drives sensibly

My son is with Hastings for his second year. He had a year no claims from his learner insurance with marmalade, then went online and got a quote for 800 for last year including his one years no claims as a learner, and this year it is £560 with Hastings. He has a Renault Clio 2008 and I pay the insurance so I know the Cost

  6. Encourage him to do the Advanced Motorists course or buy him the course as a present - it will make him a safer driver and usually makes the insurance lower

  7. Went with hastings in the end. Was £1500 quid fully comp and with NO BOX either.

When my eldest passed his test, the obvious thing to do was forget driving for a few years, bung his car addict mates petrol money and spend the rest of his imaginary "car running cost" money on beer, never be the "appointed" sober driver etc etc. Worked a treat, he waited until he was done at uni before getting a car and by that age the costs were more reasonable. I know when you're young you think you "need" a car, but you don't, there will always be a young petrol head to give you a lift, someone who got a car to commute to work and spends all the money they earn there on car running costs.

The best fix for high insurance costs is years spent not driving, as @Zed says. By the time my daughter was 23, on passing her driving test, she was able to comprehensively insure a Peugeot 307 diesel estate without any trackers etc. for a sensible price that she could afford. And even then the prices were hiked by the fact that young women subsidise the insurance premiums of young men these days.

When I was young I knew everything. Now I am older I realise how little I know ...

    Doesn’t work, that.
I ran over a cyclist on the way to my advanced test!
