Can cylinder heads be machined successfully?

  1. My CA code 1700cc type 4 engine has been running rough. An engine tuner told me thee are very high hydrocarbons at idle, and that the nearside cylinders are bypassing the inlet valves, and while both cylinders have compression, he suspected a fault in the valve train. The plugs are carbon fouled.

I have explored replacing the heads. I asked Stateside about exchange heads to be told these are a rarity. They have some 1800 recon heads for just over £1,000.

However, there are 2 local companies that offer testing and machining of my existing heads for less than half of the cost quoted by Stateside. One of which mentions pressing out valve guides, while the other offers liners for the valve guides. Both offer re-seating valves.

Is machining likely to be successful (assuming the heads are sound)? Is lining valve guides a suitable option? I welcome your thoughts.

Yes , folks have been doing it since the beginning of engine rebuilding , I’d never come across folks throwing new heads pistons barrels etc at stuff until being on vw forums , I still rebuild heads engines without replacing every nut bolt and washer for new , valve guides are available or have them made ( I’ve had a few made when unavailable) guide sleeves are fine too

  3. Brilliant, thanks for your reply. I hoped that whipping the heads off and getting someone with the necessary skills and tools available would be the way forward. I wanted to leave the barrels etc alone. If it aint broken......

Let me know how you get on.

Replacement heads are about £450 a side from Heritage parts

  5. Done both the home 'pull out guides with a thread tapped into the guide and a bolt screwed into it' then replace guides after cooking the heads in the oven method.. and getting a shop to k-line like these.. http://cylinderheadshop.com/k-line-guide-liners/[/QUOTE] but i got mine done in Warrington by a grumpy old man in a specialist shop
Both methods need the seats re-cutting really to seal well afterwards. So compare 8 guides and 8 seats recutt price to the heads cost.
