Can an prototype bay Door be modified to fit a Late Bay?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by keithandtrudystype2, Jul 6, 2013.

  1. Went all the way to Bristol to pick up a tailgate door to find that when I tried it it will not fit, the hinge holes are about an inch too high which means the door don't fit, any ideas anyone??

It won't fit, but the upside is you can sell it on earlybay.com, make a profit and buy one to fit yours.

I wonder if its possible to change the hinges to fix the problem ?

It might be, but may be more trouble to get early hinges than to exchange hatches.
Some of the hinge parts are interchangeable. White = late, red = early.

Looked harder and suspect you'd have to change all the hinge parts, though the springs are the same. I looked into doing this and ended up nicking the bushes instead of changing the parts and I wouldn't have if it had been a goer.

I know. I thought about that too. I believe you can buy new lids for less than £200, but they have that crap bit that looks like it's for a rear wiper. :(

  8. The very reason why I wanted an old un that would at least look original. Another daft question, it's the bottom edge on mine that's rotten, if I had a man who can, is it worth cutting the bottom of the early door and getting it welded to the original one?

I wouldn't want to/want the result personally. Surely more trouble than getting the right hatch and selling yours + better to have an un-messed door, however neatly done.Try a swap ad on earlybay - bound to be someone after one who's done the same in reverse...

  10. So I joined prototype bay to try to sell this bloody door, 3 bites but one guy tonite said when I sent the pics of the hinge mounting that it didn't match up with his prototype bay... Any ideas chaps? I just want to be sure what I have got...

early with late hinge held up - any help? The hinge is positioned to show where the holes in the door should be for late hatch.

100% early. The screw on wedges to the right in the pic are the other giveaway - late doors don't have them as late's aren't so posh as earlies. ;)
Take them off and sell them seperately, and the lock if it has one.

and the nice domed screws... keep them, you'll need them somewhere.

  14. Thank you so much Zed, out of interest what are the wedges worth?, there was no lock on it when I bought it...

No idea - it was a tongue in cheek jab at the early peeps - always looking for a better bit. :)

  16. I know someone with a late tailgate on an early . PO must have had it done. They have issues locking it , unlocking it and getting it to close properly. From memory I think it has welding done to it to get it to fit .
