Camber angle

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by vdub brvs, Oct 24, 2014.

  1. My front N/S outer edge of the tyre is bold, will the towing arm bring the camber inwards?
I think I know what I have just said lol. Any help and advice is always welcome, oh and can I do this myself.
People that know me will answer that last question lol

The camber nut on the top ball joint adjusts the camber,
Not sure what the towing arm is? Do you mean the track rod ends on the steering arm, they adjust the tracking not camber.
Toeing in too much would wear the outer edge of the tyre but probably both of them at the front, if just N/S then that would suggest camber too far out at the top on that wheel.

  5. Thanks Flakey, I did mean the track rod end. So do I tighten or loosen to bring the camber in. .

I think you need to go to a tyre place and get the tracking set first with a laser properly, it's not so easy to do yourself and get it accurate.
When you've got the tracking right then check the camber angle, the tyre shop may or may not be able to do this,
The figures should be in Haynes, you'll need perfectly level ground and a big steel right angle and ruler, turning the camber nut on the top ball joint brings the top of the wheel in or out, the nut is a concentric cone so a full 360* turn brings you back to where you started, ie you shouldn't need to turn it much.

  7. Ok I think I just need to book it in and get it sorted properly before I buy a new tyre then. Thought I might save some money doing it myself lol.

What Flakey said, but the other way round. You MUST set the camber first because doing so changes the tracking, whereas changing the tracking does not change the camber.
I think camber is unlikely to cause the wear you describe. Stand at a distance and look back at the front of your bus. The tops of the front wheels should stick out more than the bottoms.
