Calling Rear hinge westy owners

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by paradox, May 18, 2012.

  1. As most of you know my bus has a westy style pop top

However underneath is a converted panel van and the bed sits above the curve of the roof and the rear doesent lift like a westy

This leaves the sleeping space up top a little short

My bus is going to paul weeding in september to be painted but before its painted im having westy rear hinges fitted and a westy canvas fitted

What i need from you kind westy owners is as many pics and measurements as possible of how the roof bed is constructed and the reinforcement is done after the central roof strenghening rib is removed

Hopefully with your help it will save paul some headscratching and if he can get the fabrication the same as westfalia did then i should have no future problems

Also if anyones an old rear hinge westy canvas they dont need id appreciate it as then we could use it whilst mocking everything up before i buy a new one

para are you at camperjam mate?

your more than welcome to measure away on ours, take as many photos as needed etc

  3. I dont think ill make camperjam this year dude im afraid(first year of missing it since it started)

We basically want to copy what westfalia did as the way the roof bed is done at the moment is terrible

  4. Are you going to any other shows? There is one in Lincoln this weekend and we are there on Sunday. You are very welcome to measure up Myrtles pop top. Where in North Yorkshire are you? We are always looking for days out in our bus and could wander up't'North if diaries worked.

  5. And there's mine in York you can come and look at.

  6. I am removing my pop top tonight so. I can clean paint it and then fit a new canvas, I will do some pics and measurements while it is off

  7. Cheers for all the offers of letting me measure up
pkrboo that would be great dude cheers

What are you doing with yor old canvas dude?

  8. I was gong to keep the best bits as patches, and it may only be be good for the skip though. It is dry rotted I think. Also a bit mouldy, will take some pics for you later

  9. Hi Para;

When the central roof strenghening rib is removed it is replaced with another, but straighter... No curve.

And I am sure that there is another added at the rear..

These two ribs and the roof sides are connected by a sheet of 3/4inch blockboard / ply.. This forms a section of the bed..
The other section of the bed is hinged and folds towards the front from the central rib..

I'll see if I got any pics

    I will get measurements tomorrow

  13. Thanks for the pics guys its really appreciated

Looking at those pics the internals of a panel van roof are very different so i may have to rethink the idea of exactly copying what westalia did

Birdy im not losing the fiberglass part of my roof im aiming to get a little more height at the low end of my pop top as it doesent lift like a westfalia does so you cant fit your feet or your head down that end of the bed

I also want a westy canvas as i like the zip opening vents and front flap to access the roof rack

  14. Cheers for the link dude but a roof chop from a westy and the cost that comes with it is somthing i wanted to avoid

I may just have to fit some westy rear hinges to my pop top and a westy canvas and see if that alone increases the room up top enough to make it more usable
If not then ill have to look into a way to drop the roof bed lower but still keep the vans original strength
