ok i'm guessing it's probably part shagged as it's made that noise for 18 months....... however i'll go under and see if i can tighten them. presume turn over with alternator pulley until bolt visible?
I reckon you'll be ok as long as they are tightened fella, fact is, it ain't come off has it? Yeah just move fanbelt round til visible as you say.
ok so i got up and put van on ramps, you can see bolts from underneath (i presume it's them) 3x 13mm head? anyway it doesn't look like they are loose and i can't see a crack or elongation of the hole but if you lean to much on them the engine rotates, i've tried it in gear/park/nuteral and it turns over, so i can't check how tight they are. here's a pic to make sure it's them also if you push against the body of the bellhousing to the plate with a spanner you can move it slightly. ideas?
Oh rite ok. Listen I've been reading again..... What colour is your ATF? Check pg7 in the Bentley manual fella, says scraping, grinding noise from converter, fluid silver coloured could possibly be thrust washer in converter worn? I dunno mate, but if your bolts seem tight enough, must be something else?
not checked any mounts, just assume as it rattles in N or P as well that it was summat that span round more than moves or absorbs shock..... the one strange thing i notice too is the clonk into reverse from drive only happens when the box is warm after a drive.... i'm hoping it's summat simple but if it's engine out and have a poke about i hope it hangs on until end of november when the tax runs out.
One other thing is your idle speed. Haynes says it should be 950 +/- 50 rpm for an auto. If I set mine at 950 it's too fast as it tends to pull away on the flat and it gets more reaction changing to reverse. I've got mine slowed down so it only just bites on the flat.
mines fuel injected so idle speed is different? and sets itself? regardless the idle won't make it rattle, it does it static ticking over or more noisily if you rev it or drive it. it sounds like a knocking exhaust or loose heat sheild on a modern car sometimes, bit embarrasing when driving through a town
Hi guys, I bolted mine together this morning, omg what a bloody job, everything off the top to get to it then trying to turn both parts to get them together. Well, eventually got it done and then power went off in the workshop so couldn't take any photos, flash useless. But seeing the thread, it looks like Ricky knows which parts and so on now, cool! Need to keep digging fella so we can resolve the issue. Ran out of time so won't be able to start her up til next week now
i found the hole in the engine bay by the way..... it is visible from above and has a silver metal bung in it, there is no way i'll get on it with the injection manifolds on, and anyway how do you stop the plate rotating when you lean on it?
I guess the socket being through the hole will stop it rotating, but I thought it was decided yours look ok?
Ricky, have you checked both ends of the box - one's got ATF, the other's got regular gear oil in? Thanks for karma BTW
i checked the atf yesterday, looks a nice cherry red and smells sweet so i'm happy there, where do you check the other oil?
