Caliper difference? Extremely urgent!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by top banana racing, Aug 31, 2014.

  1. Does anyone know what the difference between early and later brake calipers is please.
Desperate as my right hand early one has just seized up and I'm going to France in 48 hours!

  2. Isn't the brake pipe in the centre of early ones ? Also the pad thickness is different I think ?

  3. The bolt size too. You will require "fillers" to fit late calipers to a 72.
    Vw heritage do them

  4. Yep, picture shows brake pipe but that wouldn't stop you swapping them? What's with the pads?

  5. Actually if you are nr cambs I have a 72 caliper you can have FOC I may even have some rebuild kits.

  6. Is it left or right?

  7. Doesnt matter it has 2xbleeders on a 72 so can go either side

  8. Where are you, I may have to drive there in a hurry!

  12. I'm of a mind to order a complete conversion kit and fit it overnight Tuesday.
New calipers, pads etc etc etc. Then I'll not have to worry ever again.
I fecking shiite meself today, 70mph along the Witney bypass, arrived at roundabout, put foot on brake and it went straight to the floor, all the way, not a thing!
Furious pumping got me enough to slow down sufficiently to get round "à la Stig".
Stopped in layby and right hand caliper was on fire. :(
Got home and stripped it and it's well buggered, got so hot the caliper has actually cracked!
Anyone tell me who supplies the best calipers/kit?
Fortunately discs were new(ish) so that looks ok. :)

  13. It might be the flexi hose making your caliper not release...

If you have the wrong side caliper you can turn it upside down to bleed it...

If you caliper was seized ever time you stopped the steering would pull to one side...
