... Cab Doors ... (again probably)

  1. Seen it's been asked a few times before but i seem to have a slightly different problem.

Can't get the cab doors back on.. either of them...

Main problem is door lock mechaism catches B pillar or striker plate catches door. I can't figure out how to set hinge position to move door forward, it just seem to move up down in out.

It's a 73, and yes it's had a new face but A pillars stayed on so shouldn't move.. and they fitted when she arrived...

while I've had them off I've painted shell and doors and fitted new seals (Wolfsburgwest i think..)

Is the paint on the hinges enough to throw it out that far? Or am i just no good at this....

  2. got a pic of how badly the door fits now? or doesnt fit for that matter

  3. paint on hinges would add a little i guess, but not a lot.

  9. Wasn't too bad before.. see photo above... looks to have grown 5mm since painting .. sure the paint isn't that thick.. see photo I'll post later.. hence need to adjust "forward"

Forgot I took catch off so won't stay shut due to rubbers by you can see gap on front edge....

Have you got BOTH screws in each hinge and done up tight?

  12. Gap at front looks huge, get a big adjustable spanner, put it on the a post captive nut plate thing and then bend it forward a little? That's what I had to do and it worked.
Will take a bit of trial and error and might scratch the paint on the a post hinge thing

  13. Cheers all..

..Both screws were in and tight but might get impact driver out next..

After maybe the big adjustable spanner, might grind all pait off hinges too.. plus a mm or two of metal for good measure...;)

  14. As for the paint scratching.... All the paint that's come off with the catching looks like I'll be touching up quite a bit anyway:(... That touching up the paint before any comments come in...

  15. Thanks all for comments.. with a bit of all the suggestions, got to here last night....better...

This makes me think you might be using an L shaped allen key, or you have cross-head screws fixing the doors?
You might manage to get them tight enough with an allen key if the screws are in good condition and you extend the allen key with something for more leverage, but I'd advise even if only for this job and CV bolts that you get yourself at least one Hex bit and holder to use with your socket ratchet handle and extension.
You probably have this covered, but if you haven't I'd get these tools before you do anything too drastic to the hinges. Another 1/4 turn on the screws can make all the difference.
If you have x-head screws I'd replace them with allen head ones.

  18. Thanks Zed...Best balance of gaps all round I could get.. and not wanting to lose it again! I'll let ruber squash a little first and try to get top in and back a few mm.. When it's not raining..

  19. Used a hex bit in a screw driver with a 1/4 " drive wrench at the end to get enough thrutch..... I think that xtra turn like you say makes all the difference

Got an adapter for a meatier wrench? My 1/4" one is tiny... I was/am labouring the point for anyone reading this after searching for cab door fitting problems in 6 months time - not getting at you - it really does make all the difference. :)

What did you do in the end - bend the hinges forward a bit?
