Cab Door Skin Repairs

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Ripley, Jan 5, 2015.

  1. The bottom edge of my cab doors is bubbling up. It appears to just be the skin of the door.

Whats the best way of going about this, the door s seem too good to replace, re skinning the whole door seems a bit drastic.

Can you buy lower repair sections or do you have buy a complete skin and cut bits off?

    Any advice tips??

Fabricate the bits. Door skin isn't that thick and I would imagine you could bend thin steel easily enough with basic tools.

Skinning might sound drastic, but patch welding cab doors doesn't always go very well. The damn things are subtly curved in all directions and you may find even replacing a small strip along tyhe bottom leads to days and days of filling and metal bashing. That's why people fit a whole one - at first it appears to be a long way round, but actually in the scheme of things it's a short-cut and you get good access to repair and treat the inner frame and a cleaner better overall result.

Try one each method and you'll see what I mean. I do mend them, but only when the top doesn't need attention and perhaps the owner has spent a bunch of cash recently on all the door/window fittings some of which almost inevitably get trashed as you remove them.

I have two spare doors that need bottom edges sorted. Might try both ways when I get better at welding. I know you're right though.

When I did mine on the drive - noo-noo - It looked like someone had kicked a football at it hard and I was ever so careful, I thought. It's perfectly doable, but the time you might save on the welding is more than made up for my the filling. Then it was all about money, it cost nothing to repair. Now the time factor comes into it, so what I might do might not be the way forward. You know what we mechnics are like - bolt on a new one. :)

I've just patched these though because it was best way forward all things considered. Insides too, other side of the filler to repair the seal channel and right round to under the door card. They should look ok. :)

All that trouble was swayed by the new door kit fitted already, but now customer has seen it's all going ok (had some poop work done previously) she wants me to do the top half as well. Had that been the original plan I'd probably have re-skinned them or replaced completely, but such is life.
