Cab door seals too long?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Farrantini, Jul 11, 2012.

  1. Hiya all,

My other half and I bought our camper, Daisy, back in November. After some lengthy bodywork issues were sorted we finally have her home (don't ask.... Suffice to say I won't be using that friend of a friend again unless I have another spare 5 months to wait). Any who, bought JK replacement seals that were awful. Just way too fat so bought some VW Heritage ones after I copped a strop with the old crummy ones.

Only issue I have is that when we put them round the seal, there was a spare 2 inches of seal. Rang VWH and they said it us more than likely that they have stretched when we were putting them on and they should shrink back to size. Has anyone else had this problem or am I really just that special??

Thanks for any help you can give :)

you need to sort of lose the 2 inches by sharing the spare around the entire length of the seal,

  3. As he said ..dont stretch them

  4. Yep - it's easy to stretch them. They are the right size.

They are made a little oversize to allow for shinkage I think.
Get the corners in, then halfway between, halfway again etc etc and the extra will disappear, nicely spread across the length.

  6. Thanks guys, I guess I just needed to know that I wasn't being fed a line just to get rid of me. Will be trying to fit them again tomorrow do will have to be more gentle with them.

    Cheers

Another tip: across the bottom, round the curves it may seem too short! To prevent it catching on the arch as you shut the door, you need to fit so it's a little stretched around the bottom curve and a little loose at the "knee".

Aah, glad I found this thread....

We've just got two new door seals and a tailgate seal from C and C......couple of questions.... to glue or not to glue? the ones we have at the moment in the doors are definitely not glued and fit just fine, only changing them cos the rubber is perished and lets in rain. And do you have to undo any bits of the door to get them around properly...am thinking of that square holey bit in the seal....?

    :)

Incidentally, the seals are the OEM ones, not the cheapos..... :))

  10. The tailgate seal should fit without glue.

Doors - either glue the lot, or use glue where the check strap is fitted - up to you. You'll need to release the check strap pin to get the seal over it.
