I’ve picked up a new cab door it has a couple of bits that need doing both to the skin and and frame.

Is it worth re-skinning or just local repairs? How hard is it to reskin?

  2. I am thinking the same - a PO had the bottom 12" reskinned and the join is awful.

  3. Mine were reskinned up to the window by the guy I had restore it,they look great but I don’t know how difficult it was.

  4. It would be a neater job if you used a large section of the skin instead of small individual repairs
It would also mean you get better access to clean up and paint the inner frame work

Don’t forget plenty of cavity wax once it’s repaired and painted

  5. Still need to cavity wax mine, there’s rusty marks on the drain holes at the bottom of the doors already

Much neater to do the whole skin as you only end up with two small welds around the window frame, and as Para says it gives you a chance to get some paint on it all.
    Not too difficult.

Few pics of the final steps when I did our doors.

Seam sealer on the brace bars to bond them to the door:

Holes punched around the perimeter of the door to plug weld the skin to the frame:

    And all welded up:

Most of the work with the doors is in repairing the inner framework, having to fab repairs for all the rotten sections:

  9. Apologies for jumping on this thread but I have a similar question - my sliding door - looks like the previous owner has cropped off the bottom inch or so - best to replace with a short section or a full skin? And do I need the internal bracing panel?

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

You can't get a full slider skin so replace as little as needed. You won't be able to access the entire back of the weld afterwards wherever you cut so there is no reason to cut off extra.

Mind it doesn't get too curly at the bottom, a very common mistake.

Just repair the inner panel as needed. They usually only rust out to around the lower roller mount.
The only repair panel for the inner isn't particularly great so use as little as possible.

  13. The bottom has been completely removed (the bit with the holes above) - so do I need to replace that bit as well as the outer skin section?

Yeap, that bit is the lower part of the inner skin.

This is the inner bit that rusts out usually:

The outer skin then goes over that to close up the door:
