I’m in the process of refurbing the drivers cab door.

The window regulator isn’t working particularly well and the inner and outer scrapers could do with replacing.

I’ve read a few posts on here and elsewhere and this looks like a tricky but do-able job for the home mechanic.

    I’m after:

    • any recommendations or avoids for replacement scrapers ?

    • any top tips so I don’t brake or damage anything ?

This is the door after removing the card / membrane and part way through cleaning..

  2. I remember doing this for the respray. I remember it being very fiddly!!

You may find that a good clean and some rubber black will save the scrapers. There is a thin sprung wire which holds the rubbers in place and this needs to be removed very carefully with a thin flathead screwdriver hole by hole along each side of the window opening. Take your time as the shape is very peculiar and hard to bend back. There's a good amount of spring in the wire so slow and steady will avoid distortion. Of course if your going to replace then bend and twist away!!

Waxoyl the hell out of the inside and use sound deadening when done (I used flashbanding from Screwfix - cheap as chips) - this will give the door a good 'clunk' when you shut it then rather than a 'clang'.

  3. Out of curiousity - what colour is that? Looks the same as mine before the respray...

  4. Flashband is a brilliant idea - did it stick ok - did you need to give it any extra glue or anything? Sorry, can't help on the actual question of this thread...

  5. Oh boy does it stick! I wouldn't want to try to remove it!!

Chunky kitchen scissors to cut it, stick it in every nook and cranny - its so cheap you may as well cover most surfaces rather than a small patch like you would do with Dynamat - then spray Waxoyl over the whole lot. I covered the whole internals of the van in the stuff.

Its a South African VW paint job.

Its a Sunburst Yellow body with a Clifton White roof.

The yellow is as near as dammit a match to Mercedes L681 Weizengelb.

Flashband is usually foil backed with a tarry substance. A heat gun can help improve adhesion (wear gloves!). A clean, dry surface and it should stick fine. It's designed to stick to brickwork, so a painted metal surface shouldn't be any problem at all

  8. Cheers mate. I’m familiar with it I’d just never thought about using it on the bus. It’s very similar to dodo mat, cheaper and, like dodo, has no smell. Win, win... win :)

  10. You definitely need some aluminium door pulls. If you're lucky someone will be selling a pair in the classifieds section...

  11. If you are renewing the sliders it is advised to bend them around the door glass before fitting them to the door channel you obtain a better fit.
Also start a swear box before you do the job it will pay for next camping trip

  12. I have a d/s winding mech £25.00 plus post - avoid the scraper change it is a horrible job - Try some silicon down the felt channels and slacken off the 1/4 light fixing bolt see i you can get a little bit of movement to not pinch the glass -

  13. I used this on my bus 4 years ago and still stuck down

So I finished the nearside door this morning..

Chuffed to bits with how it works and how it looks.

The drivers door is proving more problematic..

I had to remove the quarterlight. The old broken window winder mechanism just wouldn’t come out with it fitted.

Once the quarterlight was out, the poor state of both scrapers was obvious.

I’ll have to bite the bullet and order some replacements.

I did replace the winder mechanism with a good used one lathered in spray grease.

This one works quietly and smoothly but I can’t go any further until the new scrapers come.

How fiddly is that quarterlight to remove ? Flippin fiddly !

I’ve read the scrapers can be a pig to fit. Let’s see..

  15. Very fiddly but once you've got the hang of it you'll wonder what the fuss is all about . Quarter lights will seem a breeze .
Try to re-use the fixing wires and chrome trim as the new ones don't seem as good a fit ...

  16. Yup, there is a twist to the quarterlight but it's not that bad. A good thing too. I had my cab door all together and forgot to put the clip on the quarterlight post that adjusts the tension when opening or closing it. Out came the fiddly bits and the quarterlight again. It was way easier the second time. Go slow and don't handle it with angry feelings.

    Top tip - thanks.

I’ve had the quarterlight apart to clean it and lubricate the pivot pin.

Still waiting on delivery of the new scrapers before I can move on.

So the new scrapers I ordered from Camper & Commercial arrived today.

I was all revved up to have a go at fitting them but found the outer scraper had been dented in transit

The courier just dumped the parcel on my step. No interaction because of COVID.

It’s now I discover that C&C don’t have a number you can call them on :(

Luckily with judicious use of a wooden spatula I was able to tease the soft trim back straight.

Here it is in the door.

Strangely it comes with 5 new clips even though 8 are required.

The black tape marks the location of the holes in the door where the felt clips fit.

The vertical face of the outer scraper didn’t have any holes to fit these clips so I used the tape as a guide to drill 2 suitable holes.

Inner scraper fitted using the old spring as recommended by @Lasty

I lathered the 1/4 light and rubbers with oil to aid it slipping into place without damaging the new rubbers.

And here it is all back together..

Just got to finish waxoyling the inside of the door, fit new membrane and door card but that can all wait for a little while.

I should add a deal of credit goes to Mrs S who helped me no end with this fiddly job.

    Much easier with 2 people.
