Cab door lock mech springs

  1. I’m sharing a bit of successful experience for a change rather than a desperate cry for help. It’s taken a while but this evening, ladies and gentlemen, I’ve managed to get the spring fitted to my cab door lock mechanism. There’s a very entertaining write up of how to do it here on Type2.com.
There are two kinds of springs available on the market, I had these ones which despite being the right year - 68-73 - seemed a bit lame in the spring return department once fitted. These are the others which look shorter and easier to fit with the ends opened out further.
You are essentially working blind on this but it worked to modify the spring as described in the type 2 article and get the spring hooked on the side facing the striker plate edge of the door first.
I was then able to grip the spring with my zircon-encrusted tweezers and a bent split pin and stretch it onto the other hook a few more windings. This has given it a good spring and, no doubt, literally hours of trouble-free operation.
At least I can now do battle with rebuilding door number one. F6772083-3156-4238-8420-3BB1284DC842.jpeg
