Cab door hinges

  1. I've been offered a pair of mint van doors complete with opening quarter lights however they are a lot older than my van and the hinges are different. Is it possible to keep my existing hinges or is there something else I must do to use these doors?

  2. Yep, you can swap the hinges so you retain your late hinge half. You'll need a hinge conversion kit which you can get from jk/heritage etc. if your van is very late, 78/79, you'll also have to mess around with the check strap which is different. You can get a metal plate which allows you to use the late 'strap on early doors.

  3. I've found the hinge kits however not the check strap..Is this a kit or a diy job?

  4. If you've got early doors, you'll likely need the big springy check straps. These can be fettled to fit later fittings on the door frame. Or you could make up adaptors to fit your later straps to earlier doors. Was a thread on here not so long ago.

  5. You need the bit of flat metal in this kit, if you don't fit it, the rubber bits in your check strap will fall out inside the door.(ask me how I know;))

  6. Never try to dismantle one of the later flat check straps. Yer rubber bits will fall out and you won't get them back in again!

  7. I can see a kit for hinges, they're easy. I've also read door check straps are a pain. And really old doors will catch the cab door steps. I'm thinking that repairing my existing doors is the way forward.
