CA code gearbox - Crew-cab V Kombi ?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Rev al, Nov 28, 2011.

  1. Hi - Anyone have an opinion- ?
My '70 model year 1600 sp Crew cab with CA code gearbox, struggles to get over 55 mph. Just got '68 Kombi (fitted with a Type 4 CB code 1700 engine) also
with a CA code gearbox, comes alive at 55 mph - and just takes off ! It feels free and wanting to accelerate up to 70.
Question is: Why the massive difference ? With a same ratio gearbox, how is the performance/gearing so different ? Does the crew cab somehow have a lower gearing ?
Or, is it simply that the 1700 Type 4 has that much more poke ?
(Should add, both are running original fitment wheels and tyres)
    Thanks
    Al

  2. 1600 engine is a bit like one of those farts you do after a dodgy curry - its a bit wet and just kind of dribbles and leaks out without any real power.

the 1700 is more like a thunder bluster after eating a party 7 pack of Heinz baked beans. Lots more power, and as the frequency increases it gets even more powerful and typically ends in a big crescendo.

  4. Jeepers Joker - You should write books, waxing all lyrical like that !
I can get with the analogy - it's just the 'big crescendo' I'm bothered about - does it involve rods thru cases ?

Great ! Does this mean its ok to thrash them a bit ? (obviously maintained well, warm oil, etc) I'm new to Type 4 engines - totally love this one tho and would like to drive it harder than my 1600, which I probably treat too carefully.
The Type 4 just seems to fly !

type 4 is where it's at. 2litre rocks.

  8. Driving a van with a type 4 engine is a bit like making love to a beautiful, but dirty woman.

You just have to start off slow, take it nice and easy until she's nice and warm and well lubricated.

Then you can ride her hard and fast like she's a donkey on blackpool beach!

The harder and faster you ride her the more pleasure she'll give you

  11. i bet you shat a brick when that clutch slipped. I don't speak Norwegian but i'd loosely translate what was being said was 'feck me, is it alright'
