They should come off. However you must apply caution not to knock too hard at the new joint and knock it to pieces. If you do then you'll need a new joint. Much cheaper than buying a new shaft whatever happens.

    Try tapping it off carefully.

  4. Nope. Have faith, it will come apart (went together, didn't it ;) ). Position it with the CV facing you, and give it a good yank towards you.

Even properly assembled ones you can lock up.

  5. 2 books say to discard the dished washer from the shaft, one book says re fit it ? the kit comes with one! so, you guys that have done your cv"s , what did you guys do re this to me , confusing situation ? any advice appreciated.

I think you'll find even if you could squash it flat it physically won't fit in there.
But if there's room for it fit it, the joint shouldn't be free to slide on the splines.

  8. thanks zed , if!!! said books had said as you just have " cv shouldn"t slide" .... i might have got it ! ta !!

  9. VW deleted the washer anyway. It serves no purpose (apart from annoying you fitting it).

  10. ta again, but then i am the guy who assembled the cv joint whilst chatting to my mate , only to realise , once assembled that i now had a)a totally solid un usable joint and b) a bill for a new joint ! thank the lord this site exists! that washer question was ruining my day>old joint will be polished and displayed prominently to remind myself every day to PAY ATTENTION TO THE JOB IN HAND !!!
