Buy or make wiring loom

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Panda789, Jun 18, 2018.

  1. hi all,

Wondering what’s best. Sure this has probably been covered but searching has brought up couple of threads.

I have time that I could spend making one, but...
Is it cheaper to make one? As it is for me I probably wouldn’t use different coloured cables or I may for lighting etc. Just label every cable.
Cable and connectors seem relatively cheap.
Is it difficult? Seems fairly straight forward.

    Or should I buy one?

    Thanks
    Kierin

What’s your old loom like? Could be easier to just neatly repair that.

  3. Agreed. Unless the bus has been on fire, most of the wiring will be fine. It's the stuff under the dash that gets messed up most, I've found, so splicing in new wires and terminals is the way to go. Keeping to the correct colours is quite feasible and not very expensive if you go to somebody like Vehicle Wiring Products.

  4. It doesn’t look to bad.
Just need a better look at this week at some point. I managed to get it out whole but there seems to be some right bodges.
Going to sit down and go through it with diagram. But just seems a right mess

  5. I’d clean it up, remove any bodges and crimp on new brass connectors as necessary.

I used a rapidfit loom and it was very good but I just tried to check out their website and can't seem to find it so don't know if they are still going.

If you made your own out of the same colour wire I would strongly suggest either using a printer that can print on heatshrink or use the numbered pieces of cable sleeving on each wire core. I especially like the resistor colour code ones ... wire 123 has brown, red, orange sleeves on each end. Choose numbers so you dont have e.g. wire 13 and wire 31 as you could confuse the numbers...

Labels will fall off , get covered in oil or you will discover you used a thermal ink when all the labels in the engine bay go black or brown

  8. I looked into this. I ran new thick red cables front to back recently as my starter and main headlight wire had failed and nearly sparked up the tank!

I priced up all the front to back wires on our bus in the right colours (but not the same tracer layout) from vehicle wiring products and it was less than £30 for the lot - 10 cables.

I reckon it’s possible to make the loom for £120 all in.

My plan is to do a bit at a time - do the bits that need doing as you need to, easier and more convenient than doing it all at once.

  9. The mass of cables around the steeering column seem fine just need cleaning and sorting.
It is the cables from front to back and then the wiring at the back end.

I will try and have a look this weekend and try and work it out. It was an absolute mess when I got it!

  10. @Diddymen didn't you make a loom for your bus.

  11. yes I did, I did a thread in the 'how to' section

It's probably a bit cheaper if you do it yourself ....and don't take your time into account, but the difficulty is finding the correct colour wires if you want to keep it looking OEM

I had to buy complete reels for some colours
