  2. Thats made an interesting read, It would appear a cheap 4 into 1 system is whats needed !

  3. I have one of these

    4. Easy to fit :)

    very happy with it

What size engine do you have? works great on my 1776

  4. I have a stock 1600 TP, but want to future proof as planning to go to 1776.

Just to put the cat amonst the pidgeons, I'm having a T1 1955 stroker built for my bus By laurie Pettit. He was recommending the vintage speed exhaust, but I suggested I didn't want bling and was planning to use a standard twin pea-shooter type beetle exhaust (which will fit on my early). He says it'll be fine. The single out pipe on the standard bus muffler would be too restrictive, but the double one, problem solved. But I'll possibly fit 2x bus tailpipes if I can't get big enough bore peas shooters...

  6. Be interesting to hear how Zed gets on with a stock exhaust.

Four into ones are horribly noisy when you're cruising - I hate mine, it makes such a racket.

  13. Hi Zed :) Yes I have had this same discussion (cooling exhaust) with Laurie in the past too - (old vw git to old vw git  )

He has a lot of experience and knows a thing or two, one of the good guys ;) He is quite right to turn down your original idea of a re-jetted single solex. It would have removed most of the benefit of your engine build.

The single solex rather strangled the 1600 let alone a bigger capacity engine. This strangulation, along with the exponential rise in power consumption of the fan as revs rose, amongst other things, was deliberate, resulting in an under stressed engine. This was good for reliability esp. in the extreems of a world market where a lot of them were used in third the world.

I forgot to mention in my previous post that when I test drove my 2017 with the beetle exhaust I noticed a significant reduction in power as the revs rose.

You are right, the better 4 into one headers (preferably stainless) are a considerably larger size/ bore and as a result they work fine but, as Laurie sais, the cheaper, narrower bore ones, with the small flange, can cause more back pressure than a stock exhaust.

Incidentally, I also looked at the aftermarket side mounted exhausts, since these overcome the ground clearance problem of the "quiet" pack design and make less noise - but decided against in the end because the silencer gets in the way when adjusting the valve clearances.

It seems to me like the vintage speed exhaust is the only one that ticks the boxes for a larger engine but I would really prefer to hear one to tell how much more noisy it is compered to stock. I have tried the videos but since they dont also show stock I cant really come to any conclusion.

the vintage speed exhaust sounds a ittle quieter than it looks but the noise isnt bad, though it doesnt sound much like an air cooled vw IMHO :)
