Bus not starting after hard start kit

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by TomH, Aug 2, 2018.

  1. As the title suggests im having some issues with my 72 bay window. After constantly getting the fault if not starting when warm I took the plunge and just installed hard wiring kit. It went well and cranks over strong.
But for some reason wont start now. Is it something I could have done? It started fine before when cold just was intermittent when hot or warm.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
I'm going camping this weekend so hoping it will be an easy fix.
    Thanks :)

It was the other contact on the ignition switch that was probably duff as well. Its probably turning off the ignition while cranking.

New ignition switch time, what you really needed in the first place.

But to check it, check you have 12 volts on the coil when cranking.

If your reverse lights were working before , if you put it in reverse, keep the clutch pressed and try to start it, the reversing lights should come on in the run position and stay on but dimmer while cranking as they are powered off the coil positive.

If they go out at any time except in stop position, you have a switch problem.

    brothernumberone and snotty like this.
  3. Thanks for the reply. Ill have a go tomorrow and see what comes of it. I've never had an issue with the ignition switch before so seems weird that it would come about at the exact moment i changed to a hard start relay. I'll try changing it back aswell tomorrow and see.
    Thanks for the help

  4. Run a temp wire to the + of the coil from the battery, see if it starts. If it does as mike says

  5. So had a play today and managed to get the bus started after taking off the hot start relay but showed the same fault as before not starting when warm. Still cranks better with the kit on.
    I'm officially confused

  6. How did you actually wire the hard start relay?

  7. I followed all the instructions in the box.
    Earthed the blue 86 cable
85 brown went to the red/black wire from ignition switch
30 yellow went to positive on the coil
87 red went to spade on the solenoid
However on my starter it has two connections on the solenoid. The other being a quite heavy gauge red wire. Not sure what this is for since i can't find any posts about that so left that in place

30 yellow goes to battery positive, (or fat wire on the starter ) not coil.

  9. Sorry meant positive on the solenoid. My bad
