Burnt out ignition and voltage regulator.

Having had an epic failure with my bus on my return from Cornwall l set about investigating its little problems.

    1) Ignition failure at any given moment but fully recovered after a few moments with the ignition off.
    2) Over charging alternator or not charging at all. Usually failed to charge when cold. Ignition lights would also not always come on with the ignition.
    3) Following fitting the new Bosch coil the bus became instantly jerky when leaning over on a roundabout. Worse when leaning to the left i.e. turning right.

All l could think of when the ignition burnt itself out was that there were too many volts running around the system. A little cigar lighter device proved that the bus was over charging. But not always. It's been so hit and miss, intermittent and annoying that it just never manifested itself when l was looking. At first l did think it was the auto chokes flooding the engine because it happened more so when cold or the engine had been switched off and the chokes clicked on.

So with the volt meter here were the findings:

    At idle:

    At speed:

New regulator fitted and speed at 2200 rpm:

All these high readings would also explain why my points were burnt out. The sparks flying around the distributor was impressive of a few oww and arrs on Guy Fawkes night.

So it seemed that this was the reason why l had these problems. what l was more unsure of was the jerky running that was instant the moment the bus leant over. Going slow and keeping it as level as possible it wasn't a problem. l did however notice the new Bosch coils (l bought 2 from Coolair to keep one as back up) sounded like they are filled with fluid. Not sure what that is all about as I've never heard a coil sound like this before and with the fitting of the new unused one the jerky running vanished. This l tested by going for it round and round and round a roundabout at varying speed until l was giddy.

So now that l feel confident that l have sorted it out, does anyone know why or what these new coils are filled with??

  2. Presumably they're oil-filled. Not unusual, although I've never heard one slop before.

  5. Looks like you got your regulator sorted :).

The ratwell link is good. This whole VW blue coil business is a bit ridiculous. You just need something that makes sparks.

I've never had any trouble with the boggo Brazilian coils. Recommended - about 16 quid.

I'm going to buy a bunch, paint them all sky blue and sell them at twice the price :)...

The regulator was a breeze. l was worried about the ones l saw in the sales catalogs because they were all plastic and the regulator needs to be earthed so l was wondering how the hell it was going to do it unless a new wire was needed. Thankfully Volkspears came up trumps this morning.

  7. But aren't some old heavy arc welders filled oil...
are you sure you aint got a dodgy lead arc when you go round a corner....
im sure mine did this just pushed the wires away from each othe and checked coil wire
    fine since.

the coils will have a oil or a varnish in them for cooling.

2 reasons for the corner thing if it was electrical could be,
the contacts in the regulator where bouncing
or the coil had lost its oil and was shorting

my moneys on the springs on the switches in the regulator have gone

  14. my local car factor, few years ago was selling there coils at cost due to them sounding like a a pint in a litre bottle when shaken(not stirred),when i spoke to the guv'nor bout em ,he said there were ungraded but working models he got cheap as they were discounted by the main supplier because of the sloppyiness in them ......must admit i f i shook mine and they sounded like this ,i would ask for one that didnt sound more wetter than the mrs ;D

  16. PS This is the fellow you need. 19 quid. It's not blue, but it does work :)

  17. jerky running is probably fuel related - you on a mechanical pump or electric? If electric then it could be part of the symptoms of the electrical issue you're having. Angle of the van won't affect anything in an electrical sense, unless you're being attacked by Magneto that is
    :)

  18. get rid of them wan.ky points btw
    :)
