Building garage roof trusses

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Zebedee, Dec 16, 2013.

  1. Oh it's 18.5ft long.

  2. OK....I'll have a mess....is that 18 and 1/2 feet or 8 feet and 5 inches?

  3. draw it out double pitch length ways , might be easier to fabricate too ie two triangular trusses length ways fall to back fall to front no issues with waste gutter both ends ?

Could you not apply for planning and lose the need to compromise ? I know it costs but might be worth it ?

  7. wheres the fun in that

I thought pd under t and c planning was 70 cubes at a maximum of 4m height.

So presuming it is then a garage 6m x 2.6 x 4m high is just in.

It's the proximity to the boundary that changes it. I went for planning on mine.

    ok soz. Missed that.

  13. 70 cubic metres you mean? dont think so! I could be wrong but cant see anything on the planning portal that refers to that!

My restored 50 year old summerhouse was 4.15m tall, there was no changing it as it has a pitched hipped roof, so I dug a hole. As floor is joists and boards it worked out so the floor is at ground level rather than above - result all round apart from the tons of soil to get rid of round the garden. :)
There's no fun in planning permission.

I think you need some steel trusses BTW, though I do remember that sorry story. Just the sort of thing you see for pennies when you don't want them.

It is 70 cubic meters in most areas as standard. Some area have their own restrictions though.

  17. Make your own trusses from 125 x 50mm @ 600 mm centres c16 grade. Ideally have ceiling joists to stop the spread or if you need the head height raise them to form raised tie trusses and just bolt them where they connect with the rafters. Such a small span they will be fine and safe enough to cover you for snow loadings, bosh job done no drama :)

using a 4 x 2 as a sole plate ,with a batten tie flush with the top of the concrete panels (so you're increasing the wall height by 2 inches, not 4) :
4 x 2 rafters (bird's mouth joint) to make your trusses (with raised tie) gives you a 12 degree pitch, drive thru height of 6' 11" plus whatever you add on internally for the raised tie....
