Ever feel like just as things are going well, you kicked back down?

Passed my module 1 motorbike test this morning, woohoo,

Then drove to parents to fit a new fireplace, and on the way there had to stretch the Golf's TDi legs on the dual carriageway as usual, then 5 mins later it lost most of its power, and I'm thinking turbo has gone (probably £400 worth), nearly there so carry on, then a 007 style smoke bomb was dropped by the exhaust, followed by lots more smoke, pulled over, checked oil level, down somewhat but still on the dipstick, limped it to my parents and whilst coasting downhill the final hiroshima style cloud and sonic boom thud of smoke and burnt oil flew out the back, engine started tapping and knocking loudly so quickly turned it off. to be recovered home by RAC,

Now sat here thinking worse case scenario is, new engine and turbo - An expensive week lies ahead, as I've also got to hire a car in the meantime.

Feeling proper *******ed off, that I chanced it and continued limping it home.

Bad news mate - feeling for you. Not sure it would have made that much difference if you'd stopped straight away though.

Well done on the bike test at least ;)

well done on the test bud, pants news about the car though!

  5. I was glad of the bike license last week when my Alfa decided to show me it's unpredictable nature and throw in the towel in the cooling department.

  6. How much oil was left when i eventually died?
Sounds like a duff turbo oil seal (or similar) causing it to burn its own oil. :(

  7. My turbo has gone before and I had smoke & oil billowing out of the exhaust too - so it *should* just be the one problem.

Not a nice problem to have though - on the beamer it was £1300 to fix, ouch.

  8. Whoa, £1300.
I paid less than that for my westy. ;D

Put some oil in it lastnight and it started and seemed to idle ok for the brief moment I let it run, looks like I may have been lucky and not trashed the engine, still recon turbos are about £400, ouch..

Should have the post mortem, later or tomorrow.

  11. If with new oil in the engine it runs and doesn't sound like a bag of spanners in a tumble drier you might be lucky and just need a replacement turbo.
