Broken distributor clamp

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Sick Boy, Mar 27, 2012.

  1. I was doing my timing on Sunday and noticed the clamp to my dissy was broken. I have ordered a new one from vwheritage. When it arrives do I just lift out the distributor, replace the clamp and then reset the timing? Are there any pitfalls to watch out for in doing this - like putting the distributor back properly? I heard it has to be correctly aligned or something? Thanks John

The dizzy will only fit easily onto the shaft one way. There is an offset slot in the shaft that locates with and offset 'lug on the dizzy.

I think (from memory) that when TDC the offset slot is perpendicular to the case joint with the bigger 'half' to the flywheel. This will give you a good idea of how to allign the lug when you put it back in. (Assuming you have a type 1 engine).

If you mark the dizzy and the case, then reallign these marks when the clamp is replaced, it will give you a good starting point to time from.

  3. when I put mine back in it hadn't located properly but looked in position, upon trying to start the engine it turned over very roughly & chuffed a bit, when it did start and with a few thousand revs there was an almighty pop & the engine stalled as the distributor drive had definitely come out of position & the timing was anywhere!

Make sure the distributor is pushed home nicely & the clamp is properly located in the groove on the distributor body

  4. Think im right in saying check the rubber o ring on the dizzy shaft is ok , prob better to fit new one they are pennies. :)

  5. Thanks a lot for your answers - I think I can give this a go now. (I did request a new O ring from vwheritage) Cheers John

  6. Dont overtighten the nut that holds the dizzy clamp down or you will strip the thread in the engine case

  7. Did the job today and all good. Thanks for giving me the confidence with your answers. Now just got to find some petrol. John
