Broken breather woes

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Cockers, Nov 24, 2020.

  1. I knew things were going too well on my resto... “Where’s that pipe come from?” Says I. Oh plums, it’s what used to be attached to the top of my n/s breather bulb!

What are my options for replacing? I was hoping to remove the remainder and repair but the bulb is welded to the top of the d pillar so won’t be able to get that out, help!

Chop the vent louvres out and weld through there?

  3. I’d rather avoid chopping holes. I can bend a new pipe up to approximate the current setup but not sure how important the bulb is

  4. I’d imagine you can live without it on one side.

The bulb stops the breather from spitting raw petrol if petrol slops up there with a full tank, it has a larger capacity than the pipe that leads up to it, so vapour and air burps can bubble past any stray petrol in the bulb., then later the petrol flows back to the tank.
You could make one up using cunifer brake pipe and copper tube carefully crimped round the brake pipe then soldered.
If you omit the loop and bulb and run the breather across horizontally for instance, it emulates the classic split rubber breather joining hose in the spare wheel well and pours petrol out on corners or after a fill-up.

  6. Pickups seem to manage perfectly well without expansion bulbs and miles of pipes!

  7. Is the tank higher than the engine in a pickup?

  8. Its higher than the engine in all of them isn't it?

  9. Cheers Mike, I was planning on making the same shape out of a continuous piece of 7mm OD steel tube just without the bulb as I don’t trust my brazing skills to that degree, should give some room for expansion right?

I don’t believe they are expansion bulbs, I think they are condensing units , you can run rubber hoses to them if there’s enough sticking off them, they are welded in before the rear corner goes smooth on, they are pretty well attached

  11. ^my view as well. Cooled in the airflow, they condense any vapour, which then runs back into the tank.

You'd have to seriously overfill your tank to get fuel up there. Unless you're moving to Africa, I'd say you can live without one of them.

  12. Sorry, by expansion I meant a little more room in the breather system for fuel that would somehow get that far. The bulbs are definitely for condensing fuel back into the tank

  13. ive got this on mine - i was plannin on running a loop of fuel hose halfway up the vent and back down. maybe with a plastic fuel filter at he top of the loop.

gonna be a bugger to do with my wrist in a cast - so may have to wait a few more weeks!

I would do something like that ^ but I wouldn't bother with the filter. The condensing canister is the icing on the cake IMO but I reckon we can live without those in the UK. Can't be too difficult to push a loop of hose up there.
