Broke Down Again

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by mgbman, Sep 18, 2016.

  1. My son's T25 has broken down on his way back to Hastings from Grill n Chill.

Its a 1980 air cooled with the 2l cu engine and twin solex pdsit carbs. I cant get to him but the AA man says the engine has sparks ok but only firing on 2 cylinders and one carb seems to be blowing instead of sucking.

On Friday my son put diesel in the tank instead of petrol and had to get the AA out to drain it. Engine has electric pump which is running ok.

Engine ran fine to Grill n Chill but van broke down on a hill near Hastings, lost power, then stopped.

The AA is now recovering the van.

I told my son it sounds like one carb has a stuck float valve so is not getting fuel.

The van has not been used much this year.

    Your thought please.

  2. First step would be to flush the fuel lines and carb bowls out, I'd think.

The diesel would have given it a good de-coke and the flushing the tank raised up the crud from the bottom of the tank. If it didnt have a catalytic converter , should have just diluted it with petrol then done a smelly noisy Red Arrows impersonation for a while, diluted it some more and so on.. .

  4. He said he started the engine and moved the van away from the pumps waiting for the AA man to drain the tank for him. Unfortunately my son called me after he had moved the van as the first thing I advised was not to start the engine as diesel would be drawn in through the filter. then electric pump and to the fuel lines and carbs.

The van went ok to GnC but sat on site from Friday to today.

  5. If some diesel was left in the tank it would have sank to the bottom ,the same for the carbe bowls ,while driving more and more diesel might have collected in the bowls...

drain both bowls and see if it runs...(it is step one to make sure )

  6. You are all thinking like me that the diesel is the likely cause.

    Your son is the cause.
Edit:And you’re responsible for your son so it’s your fault.

  8. My son lives the modern rush rush worry worry lifestyle and no doubt he was in a rush to fill up and off to GnC on Friday to meet up with his old mates in the Kentish Club.

Me, I am retired and chilled and still useful apparently when it comes to helping out with cars and camper vans.

I was at the Grill n Chill again this year and enjoyed it very much.

    Brighton Breeze next.

  11. I get told off for mentioning them, but I hear they are rather nice and reliable.

I am sticking with my Bay as I manage to drive it most days and have the time to look after it.

The AA recovered the broken down T25 to my son's local garage to sort it. One of the chaps there had a T25 for many years and they have done work on the van many times before, so know it.

If the van was here I would sort it myself and I have loads of spares including a pair of nice refurbed solex's we were going to put on but didn't get round to it. Good thing too as wouldn't want them gummed up with desel.

It might be more hassle if you put the wrong fuel in a Bongo and ran the engine. :)
