Help ! Just purchased some nice BRMs for my 1978 bay thinking they would fit straight on but I have a problem with the offset. The bus is slightly lowered and we have always had std steel wheels on. The front BRMs fit on just about ok but will perhaps catch the inside edge of the arch if we hit a big bump. The rears however will foul the arches on the edge even when I let the jack down. Do I have the right wheels they are MWS. 15x5.5JJ ET 7. not sure what all that means but I thought that was the size I needed? Tyres are 185/65 Michelin commercial tyres Is there a simple fix for this problem ? Or should I have stuck With the steels ? Shaun
You need to roll the inner lip of the arch in a bit to avoid rubbing. A paif of mole grips may do the job bur there's specialist equipment to do the job, cheap to hire http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WHEEL-ARCH-ROLLER-DIY-HIRE-EURO-COILOVERS-STRETCH-TYRES-DUB-RAT-MODIFIED-/270984242404?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3f17eb64e4
Shaun, this may help. http://www.alloywheels.com/Tyre_Calculator Note. yes it is in mm. The larger the number, the further in the wheels sits. With a 7mm offset your wheel is sitting 13mm further out then mine. not good, when lowered !! 7 is a dreadful offset. I have no idea why the wheel manufacturers have such bad offsets for the latebay. Even with a 20 offset, 195 tyres will only just squeeze on. A nice 30 - 40 offset would let the wheel and tyre clear the lip on the front and help with rubbing, plus clear the rear wheel lip and allow a wider tyre. Why not even give us some 6", 6.5 or 7" wheels
Looks like I will have a set of BRMs for sale soon. As soon as I work out what offset they actually are. Shame as they are a lovely set of wheels and look great on the front but they would deffo rub too much too be useful on my bus. Maybe someone with a narrowed beam or something will be able to use them?
