Probably a silly question. Is it normal to have a light breeze of air blowing under the engine, either side of the main engine fan, near the exhaust? 1979 Super Viking, 2lt type 4, Automatic
Leave the engine running in winter, go round the back and let the warm cooling exhaust blow up your trouser legs. Works for me
Good idea. I might even lay under it. Lovely and toasty. (wasn't sure if that breeze should have been routed somewhere else.....so, thanks for the info)
It will be when you turn the heater on; the hot air will be routed to the front of the bus instead of being dumped after the heat exchangers.
The breeze I'm referring to is literally either side of the engine main fan, under the engine, by the exhaust Geoff. Are you referring to air the exits the heater pods when the heater is off Geoff?...i.e. after the Heat Exchangers? I certainly get a blow around there when the heaters are off as it comes out the top of the pods. Come to think of it.....I thought all air from the main fan ended up in the heat exchangers? hmmmmm.....now I'm confusing myself again!
Noooo. Some fan air goes to the exchangers, but most goes down over the cylinders or through the oil cooler, then out.
OK, nice one. So, the air that the fan sends over the cylinders just exits around the tinware...this is the breeze I'm referring to. And somehow, it also sends some air into the heat exchangers and onto my tootsies in the cabin. OK. Got it. Thanks all. Anyone got a diagram or a video showing the route of the airflow via the main fan? Only out of interest. Nothing else to do on a Sunday night
This shows the heater air flow http://www.ratwell.com/technical/Heating.html The cooling air goes through the flaps at the top of the fan shroud across the cylinders and oil cooler then out the bottom.
Nice pic.....makes sense. So when the main fan sends the most important cool air over the cylinders and oil cooler, how does it also send air into the HE's? Is that almost "surplus air" that goes into the HEs?
am geeting lots of them breezes from the back of the chair am sitting on , but am not aircooled ,and i stink
The air for the heater goes out of the bottom of the shroud through a couple of little flaps, the cooling air goes out of the top of the shroud – there’s plenty for everything.
Ah ha! And just seen a picture of the inside of the fan shroud., so makes perfect sense now. Nice one, thank you.
