I'm technically a newbie, having purchased a 76 US Westy Berlin, fairly solid but need mechanicals sorting. Within 5 mins of it arriving on my drive, a LB member pulled up and recommended the LB Club - now that's service (Hi Lardy)! I am now getting to grips with working on it (engine type4 2lt FI), having diverted from getting it started to looking at hoses after Chrisradioman's life-and-van-saving advice on fuel hoses (chalk me up as another success Chris, mine were perished including the non-existent one behind the light cluster). However, I am confused with what I have, some of the breather and vacuum hoses are missing and not connected so have been struggling to replace. The one that according to Ratwell should be connected between the deceleration valve and brake booster hose has been cut off (red circle in photo), with the other end closed off (yellow circle). Also should not the small end of the deceleration valve be connected to something - Ratwell suggests fuel pressure regulator? Is there a reason for this, should I put it back? Really grateful for any advice. Also attach photo of van.
Hi and welcome from sometimes sunny Southend in Essex. I to have a 76 2.0 Fi from California and must admit there a lot of hoses fuel/vacuum/breather to check and change. Suggest you buy copy of Bentleys workshop manual soon its full of info and diags for usa models but until then have found a couple of diagrams that might help
As with Izzybay, we have a '77 FI bus from California If you look on here: http://www.type2.com/ on the left hand side is a menu, look for LIBRARY and click it, it will give you an A to Z breakdown - look for fuel injection & you will find, somewhere in there a list of all the hoses, locations and diameters you need to get up & running. Where are you based?
hello mate welcome, another fi van here there's a few of us, @pkrboo helped me a lot with what goes where on the fi stuff and @PeaSoup knows a bit too.
Thanks Izzy, hadn't seen those before - really helpful. I'm in north Essex near Dunmow, so may catch you at a meet once I can get the van running.
Cheers Mork, that's a really useful link. I'm afraid I'm an Essex lad, but don't believe all you read, I won't be blinging the van!
Hi Cheesy hope to see you at a few shows next year! Just found another diag for vac hoses. When the weather clears up and I can get to my engine (under a cover at the mo) I will take a few pics of engine and post them. Good luck
I will double check but I an pretty sure that the red circle should connect to the yellow circle. I think I have a spare one you can have in the garage. Will check when I get home. The small end gets a vacuum from down by the throttle body, again if I remember correctly but will check when I get home
Much appreciated - I thought that's what should happen, but for some reason the hole at the end of the yellow circle has been deliberately closed with a bolt end.
Standby for many photos hopefully they will all make sense. The S hose is pretty obvious from the first pic. The decel valve VAC hose connection is connected down to the fuel pressure reg. This is t'd off up to the inlet air plenum(hopefully you can see this in the pics) S hose attached to decel valve VAC hose into air plenum T attachment into fuel pressure reg Spare hose I have
Many thanks, that's now really clear. I vaguely remember seeing an S shaped hose like that in a box of bits I got with the van - if not I'll take up your kind offer, will look tomorrow. When I got the van a lot of people said to ditch the FI and go for carbs, and have read lots of debate on TLB, how do you find it?
The FI is awesome, I love it. If its working and running OK do not ditch it. It's very smooth and once everything is checked it will start on the button with no dramas
Agree with pkrboo when its working its brill, have also fitted Pertronix electronic ignition which made starting and running even smoother.
The sun has got his hat on today so was able to lift the cover off van and took this piccy's hope they help, its a mine field of pipes! There in in two posts!
