Breakdown.. Are you covered

    Plenty of peeps declare their vans as MOT exempt, but be aware it seems breakdown companies now won't attend if there is no MOT. I can't confirm which breakdown companies will or will not attend.

    I've not suffered with this, but I know someone who had no MOT and the AA wouldn't attend a breakdown.

    Just beware and read the small print.

    This is from Classic Line Insurance Breakdown (Motor Breakdown cover is underwritten by AmTrust Europe Limited) ... Your vehicle must be permanently registered in the UK with a current MOT certificate

    Has anyone suffered with this or does anyone not have a current MOT and breakdown have attended?

    Yep. I highlighted this a few years ago Ray so it's timely to post a refresher.

    It's worth checking with your provider coz the small print can be contradictory.

    I think ours changed the wording on the breakdown policy as a result of me harassing them over the discrepancy in the terms and conditions :thumbsup:

    Green Flag provides cover … or certainly the Mayday version does.

    Now, if I break down, then I'm in trouble :D

    Our bus is fully mot'd and as far as I'm aware, Nationwide's breakdown / recovery perk (via the Flexi account) will recover us, based on a discussion a couple of years back.

    They have stipulated that vehicles need to be taxed and mot’d and insured for years and years, most likely it means road legal , as an mot exempt vehicle is road legal I doubt this is a thing

    Several I’ve seen stipulate an MOT “ if required”….at the end of the day why worry about small print on an issue you are ( or should be ) aware of. Gawd knows there’s enough other small print that may scupper you. Just get it MoT’d ;)
    If it’s in the middle of the night and jobsworth Joe turns up and insists that “ computer says no MOT “ do you want to get home or not ?

    Mine is MoT exempt, it was easy enough to get insured under a ‘Historic Vehicle’ taxation, and my A.A. covers me for ‘any’ car, so…

    Also, I’m spending time and any spare money on it, replacing parts, so hopefully, it won’t break down.
    Slowly getting there…

    Replacing parts sounds like a recipe to breaking down.

    If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.

    It was the AA who refused to go out to my friends breakdown. Maybe the will with yours maybe the won’t.

    I have been replacing parts on it since 2006. I’m on the home straight, now.Not many left to get.
    It stops and goes as it did, when it was new.

    I’m sure it does, I bet the ‘new’ parts won’t last as long though…

    I try and get NOS or second hand parts if a can.

    Me too.Easier and cheaper to find, almost 20 years ago.

    I'm with the AA through my Lloyds bank account, when we broke down on the M6 (on the way to Techenders), the AA came out without a problem.

    As we broke down in managed motorway section, I rang 999. the call handler asked me if I was aware I had no valid MOT. I politely said the vehicle is over 40 years old and didn’t require one. She moved onto the next question….

    Which reminds me…I have a couple of original Solex Pict 34’s for a rebuild. Might get on and do that.:thumbsup:

    I do remember one given to me.Probably here somewhere under all the other stuff.( 5 peoples vehicles to cater for now…)…

    Last year we went to the Outer Hebrides on the Harley. When we were over there I found out that the AA only cover you on the UK mainland, luckily we saved having a puncture until we came off the ferry at Ullapool and picked up a rusty nail. The next day I rang the AA, who pointed out that the bike was SORN, I’d got an MOT but forgotten to re tax it!

    Although they washed their hands of us, they did offer to quote for the 430 mile recovery home at my expense. I told them not to bother, it would have probably been cheaper to sell the bike to a passer by for £1. Luckily the only person we met on a beach walk had given us the number of a bike shop, who came and sorted the puncture out.

    Im pretty sure that you only need an MOT if legally required, but I’m going to ask if our local MOT guy would do me an informal inspection and only put it in the system if it passes.

    Just wondering why you would do this. Perhaps your local MOT man may charge you less for “ a look round” but if he checks everything and it would pass then you incur the fee. If it doesn’t then you pay him for the look round, carry out the work? And then either take it back and go through the palaver again or do the required work diy.
    Not being critical, just curious as to your reasoning. If you need mot guy to check then presumably you do not consider that you have the skills or confidence to feel assured that all is good. Perhaps however it is a time thing. Either way I wonder why you would not want a record of an MOT fail ?

    just taking it a step further. If I was buying a van would I prefer it had a very recent “ fail certificate” than no certificate at all :thinking:
