Hi all , does anyone know of a decent breakdown/ recovery that covers Europe? I’d like cover that includes repatriation of my bus back to the Uk if needed. Ive got Adrian flux at the moment but I’m sure it doesn’t include this . Thanks for any suggestions, Dave
All I'll say is .... You gets what you pays for . AA cover is expensive but works and that's what I've used in the past when I've had time in forrin parts with Lady Lasty . I've never used it but know people who have and never had a problem. Be aware , as with most companies offering repatriation for the van , it may take a few weeks/months until they get a full transporter and send a whole batch back at once . When I go on mi own I'm insured but no breakdown cover after having a weird alternator problem in Austria and wasting days trying to get help on the cover included in the insurance policy resulting in just being sent around in circles. I sorted it myself in a couple of days with help from a beetle driving local who knew the local breakers and a sympathetic machine shoppe who let me use their lathe to make up a few spacers to pack out the alternator pulley. Carried on and the botch got me to Croatia and back , in fact I haven't touched it since and still running... Moral being try not to break down and if you do sort it out yourself - you'll meet some wonderful people OR ..... Get AA cover Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
Aa for me, it was a bolt on for my existing policy, But be aware that repatriation does not mean straight away, some insurers will give you a courtesy vehicle if yours can't be fixed and put yours in storage until they have enough on a transporter to head to the UK, A fellow camper lost his for 4 months , in that circumstance I would have got myself back home, hired a trailer and recovered it myself, Just read the small print or ask the questions
As above but I used the RAC and payed that bit extra to get a couple of grands worth of repair money towards any fix. Not cheap but peace of mind!
Another thing to look out for is some will only recover up to the market value of the vehicle. last time I went the AA was the one that provided the best cover
I just checked and the AA European Breakdown Cover summary says they cover vehicles of any age including campervans. It may be expensive but you almost certainly wont have to wait for the insurer to save money as you saved money by leaving your broken down bus somewhere for many months until they have a value for money truck load to bring back..

We have UK and European breakdown cover through Mrs S bank account which having checked previously is provided by the AA. One thing I noticed in the (very) small print is that the vehicle be mot’d and that proof of servicing ‘may be requested and needs to be provided’. Neither particularly surprised me but I think both points are worth being aware of if your looking at cover options especially where provided by AA.
In Southern Spain at present . Stopped overnight and met a lovely couple in the bar. Asked them “ do you like the site “ . Lovely they said but an overnight stop had extended to 4 weeks. They were towing a caravan with a 4 year old BMW. Shock absorber went. Insured with RAC via Barclays Bank. Apparently no parts in Spain , or France, ….a really long story but RAC shocking. We like to think of them as a solid “ British Organisation “. I may be wrong but seem to recall that they pimp out their “ badge “ to any 3rd party sheister insurance company prepared to pay. Similar to a franchise . Adrian Flux…..in my experience stay clear. Hegarty , so far , seem the best.
Through a bank sounds like the cheapo option as a gimme with a paid for bank account. Lots of stories of roadside assistance being farmed out to cheap companies when euro cover is taken that way. I know it shouldn’t make any difference but from my travels abroad I’ve found it does. Fortunately I’ve only broken down twice in forty years since first driving abroad, the only time I used the RAC they brought us a new engine to Paris and had a local garage put it in it cost me £480 for the engine back then a new 1600 tp no cost for anything else. The other time I broke down was in southern Italy, a yokel fixed it and made me eat tea with his family and camp the night in their yard as payment. Happy days
AutoAid for me, cheap as ya like, have used them twice since I switched from the AA and their speed and service is so much better because it's essentially deliveroo for car fixers and recovery people so everyone who turns up knows you'll get a phone call checking how they did after they've gone.
