As the title says. I have a decent solex I want to rebuild but it needs a good clean so I was thinking about taking it to pieces and soaking it in brake cleaner? Sound like a good idea?
I'd think it would be fine. Keep an eye on it. I can't think where you'd get a bucket of carb cleaner these days.
Should be fine, I'm pretty certain I've read on a Mercedes forum they are pretty much the same stuff in a different can!
The thing with old carbs its not just the built up gunk in the drillings you need to remove its the fuzz of corrosion aswell
Thats what i used for years followed by white vinegar One thing that ive not found a cure for yet is those little instant gasket worms that break off and clog up the most needed of holes I dont think its the products use thats the problem Its more like the products missuse
Ultrasonic cleaning is the best thing to do to clean an old carb The thing is by the time you have paid for that and the rebushing of the carb and a new gasket set You could have bought an empi copy made in china and been back on the road in a day And being honest i ran a empi carb on the paravan for many miles with no problem other than cheap o rings 50 pence fix and it ran sweet
I got this carb cheap as chips and there's no wear on the bushes (otherwise I would have chucked it) so I'm thinking clean it up, fit new gaskets etc and hopefully a cheap good carb. Time will tell as it's soaking as we speak. I have others if this one turns out crud.
Yep, go for it. Solexes scrub up well. If the bushes aren't worn and the choke and solenoid are ok, it'll work as good as new
