Braking issue

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Dicky, Jan 30, 2016.

  1. I have a concern with my brakes. All seems fine and have adjusted rears. No evidence of any leaks. When i brake to slow down all is fine. When i brake to stop, ie a little more pressure on the pedal then pedal goes hard, almost like its hit a stop. Hard to explain really and its a little intermittent also. Have checked servo line for leaks, doesnt seem to be any. No fluid leaks and all pads, shoes seem fine.

Ive got the servo fed off no 3 (dell carbs on 2 litre type 4). Im going to swap out one of my rear cylinders tomorrow as the bleed nipple is sheared, need a pipe making up so that stopped me today as i was going to run new fluid through the system to eliminate that.

Im thinking its a servo issue possibly or could it be theres not enough vac to operate it just off the one manifold.

I've run mine from one Dell manifold OK, it was about 10mm internal dia fitting IIRC.
Maybe the diaphram in the servo is damaged and only leaks when you brake hard?

  3. Im thinking servo tbh. Its a bit strange but it is as though at a certain point when the pedal is applied theres no servo assitance. Will eliminate everything else first but its been intermittent. First showed when i put the dells on i think!

  4. Obvious Q, but is anything physically obstructing the pedal?

  5. I think the internals of you master cylinder have come adrift ,I have had this...

tis easy to fix it is just a screw on the end of the plunger...

tb I would'nt drive it like this...

    brothernumberone and zed like this.
  6. No nothing i can see and no works been done in that area.

Thanks i will get to the bottom of it even if its by a process of elimination. Looks like weathers going to stop play for a while today but will get my brake pipe made up. Stripping master is a potential world of pain though, Its likely to be the original. Never stripped one before.

How old is the servo unit ?. If it's the original m/s it's done very well .

  8. I swapped it out for a second hand one about 15 or so years ago. So likely its 40 years old anyway. If its servo i wont be too upset fitting a new Brazi on. In fact probably best to swap servo and master cylinder if thats the case. Unless anyone knows anything different ie, dont do it as the quality is pooop. Anyway. Not at that point just yet.

  9. Shame gsf dont sell em , given the discount! They do the expensive one but not going there!

  10. just a circlip where the shaft comes out ,no pain , because no rust ...

I am 100% confident that is the problem...

I think it is deffo cheaper to buy the Brazi servo and m/ cylinder together, rather than separate. But it is a shame about the holes not lining up on the bracket but it is all doable as you probably already know .

  12. Well...... Stripped offside rear. What a palarva, struggled getting the hub off with handbrake disconnected, adjusters wound in. Came off eventually and found that the clip had come off the pin on the free end of the handbrake spreader bar. Need to change the spreaders and replace all the hardware but fitted new cylinder as bleed nipple sheared off yonks back, and put all back togethe, had a drive improved but still not happy. Need to adjust rears up again and bleed all four corners and see what its like but ran out of time.

Could do with a picture of some 72,73 rear brake set up just to see which way round the pins and clips go.

Pin for HB lever through shoe from back, lever in front of shoe, clip on top.

  14. Cock. Did it the other way around! Ie pin from front through spreader, then shoe and clip on back(i think)
    Ah well!

You have clip through spreader too? Not sure about that one without thinking. If it doesn't catch on anything it should be fine either way?

  16. Spreader is fixed one end with a pin and loose the other end on another pin. Its a 72/3 remember. Im tempted to swap all the shoes and hardware for proper late bay stuff as although you can get stuff at the mo i recall times when they werent available. Think mines a lash up with what i could get years back tbh.
