Brakes failure

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by paulski915, Apr 21, 2014.

  1. Hi out in the 74 camper today and after about 10 miles put foot on brakes and peddle went to the floor I pumped the peddle and they came back (wife still screaming lol )

Drove on a bit to the nearest place to stop safely and the peddle still went to the floor on first push then ok
Had a look underneath and could see no leaks

Got back in put foot on brake peddle and it was back to normal

This happens after I done a emergency stop just to try the brakes

Would anyone have any ideas what it is I'm thinking the master cylinder is playing about (non-servo)

    Thanks
    Paul

You could have boiled the brake fluid with an enthusiastic stop!
When was the last time it was changed? Also check the level in the reservoir to double check no leaks.
It happened to me last week with a sticky calliper on the ns front. It's scary isn't it :)

Have you been using the bus or has it stood over winter? Could be leaking slave cylinder at the back letting air in and will be a while before you notice if it's leaking slowly in the drums.

  4. Fluid was changed 12 month ago level was ok

Yep was scary all right tomorrow job is to clean both seats lol

Even the dog started barking lol

  5. I boiled mine and had similar after a sticking caliper too....

It didn't half take some shifting with a crow bar and helper on the pedal. All good now though...

  7. It was its first outing for about 6 months
The rear brakes are all new 12 month ago only done 500 miles max

  8. have you checked reservior , id check level in their first then go from their , and what has been said ^^^^

Don't assume that because they were new recently the problem won't lie there.
Scary stuff! This has never happened to me, but if it did I'd be going through everything systematically until I found the culpret.

If the rear brakes were not properly adjusted and/or not readjusted a couple of hundred miles after fitting there may well be quite a big gap between the pistons and the shoes which takes up the first time you use the brakes with a lot of pedal travel. But you can pump up the pressure.
Then the second use of the brakes the pistons are already out and touching the shoes.
I have been there and done that...

check for a rear wheel cylinder leak , this is the sort of symptoms of that
