Brake upgrades

  1. The problem with the Bay brakes is that they are so good, if you do need an emergency stop, the bus stops really really well, but all your gear in the van doesn't

The brakes are fine, if well maintained.

    /\ this!

Don't leave anything loose in the back that you don't want in the back of the head...

If you only put stronger brakes on the back, it will just lock up and skid . The stock system only needs drums at the back, and has a proportioning valve to reduce the effectiveness of the rear brakes under hard braking to avoid the back end overtaking the front end..like Austin Metros used to go through hedges backwards if you tried to stop at speed.
I have outbraked a Vauxhall Astra at 55mph. They hit us but not hard ..

Hmm even when the wife annoys me

A little clip on the back of the head soon improves her mood

Did you see my brake/wheel bearing refurb pictures... thought I had better do it - after my upgrade

They were shocking to say the least.

Once done it made a massive improvement, along with new rubber hoses at the front.

I missed that one, but I guess you have done the same as us, new bearings, caliper refurb, slave cylinders etc

I will have a look later when I'm working having a cuppa :D

Both wheel bearings where a bit like this...

    And then fixed

Not as shiny as yours, but I’m not concerned by that. The calipers I put new pistons & seals - as you know, that’s all there is too it. Recently @pkrboo changed the front hoses.

shiny doesn't matter, so long as they work that's the main thing, they only get covered in brake dust at the end of the day!

I replaced my old rubber brake pipes, new seal kits, painted the callipers, changed the oil, new backing plates all round, new drums and shoes on the back. It’s like new.

  11. Yep. Polish your calipers if you like, but after a month they’ll be covered in black muck again.
