Brake shoes, drums, levers and spreaders, adjustment and issues with new parts

  1. How many years has it been since you shut up shop Steve?
Vwh did used to be good but they have been slowly getting worse over the years
Remember when a member of staff came on here to help answer questions and check things for us
Now they don’t even want to talk to you on the phone.
Lots of parts and parts availability has changed as well over the last ten years.

They have just expanded big now Para and have lost the old VW touch now .
To be honest i preferred them when you just phoned them up ordering stuff with the parts mag on my knee 15 years back .

All done. Alan Schofield sent the drums after I parted with some dosh, and they are all fixed, adjusted, test driven and parked. Just need to drive a few miles and adjust again when everything is bedded in. :)

BBT .. that brand seems to be the current go to brand..

Somewhere in their development pipeline are also brand new replacement Late Bay cab doors.. but if their front panel is £750 for three bits of pressed steel joined together I dread to think of the price.. .

  8. Before I go ordering loads of bits for the rear drum brakes..
I have a handbrake cable the doesn't return so sticks on so are they equal lengths left and right and probably a pig to change.
On the wheel cylinder is it both pistons move or just the forward one pushing the shoe to the drum....not worked on these brakes in ages and can't remember....

    Brake cables should be symmetrical.
And the amount of rust defines the difficulty of changing them.

Late style brake drums should come off with just the two M7 bolts undone.
Rusty lip on drum may prevent the drum coming off.
Rust between the drum and the hub may prevent the drum coming off.
Dont change the drums for new until they are out of spec as new drums seem to warp more easily.

Single cylinder with two opposed pistons pushes top of both shoes outwards. Handbrake arrangement also levers top of both shoes apart.
    Adjusters at bottom..

  10. Thanks for that, looks like a new cylinder as well then. It looks like it's only the forward part of the cylinder that's moving.
