Bobby - 1979 Berlin Westy T2

  1. It's only been eight months since it was suggested I post a thread in here... Better late than never and all that...

Below are some pics of Bobby, our T2 Westy. I'm ashamed to say we took no pictures when we bought him and before we had a lot of work done. We bought him in November 2009, he had been imported from the US and was sitting in a barn unregistered for a few months. He was originally Mexico Beige, great bodywork with minimal rust (sigh, that all changed...) and a solid 2.0 litre fuel-injected engine.

We had a lot of work done to get him roadworthy. I remember the petrol tank having thick sludge at the bottom which we think was evaporated/reduced petrol... we ended up just cutting it off and getting another tank from a scrapyard. The scrapyard also served up a new gas regulator/intake that sits under the sliding door. There were just exposed pipes when we bought it so I guess someone took a shine to the original years ago. The engine was pressure tested and found to be well-balanced. All the perishables were replaced. Spare wheel was moved to under the front windscreen. Some new internal lights were installed, a standard 12v socket was added to the dash as well as the very important stereo and speakers. The bodywork was repainted in the yellow/white you see below. I remember that winter of 2009 we had some bad snow which slowed things down a bit for moving him around to get jobs done, but the whole lot was MOT'd, registered and on the road by February 2010.

All the engine work was done by Andy Litchfield at VDub Campers near Chichester. We originally hired a campervan from him a few months earlier to see whether we really want to own one...

Since then he's been used for between 3-5 family camping trips every year. Usually long weekends and an occasional whole week. So far he's never let us down. I was expecting a few breakdowns, but haven't had one yet.

For my 40th birthday I decided to get a good awning rather than have a party... I know, very rock n roll... If it rains badly, we put Bobby inside the aircraft hanger and we all sleep outside in the rain.

Love Westys, and Berlins especially. And that is certainly a big awning .....
