Described as a dingy dirty and neglected back alley by the developers this is a bit of music history that will be gone forever and replaced with a spangly new overpriced suit filled venue. http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/londons-iconic-denmark-street-set-for-redevelopment-588311 This aint rock n roll. It's got a scruffy charm...often take a look down there when I'm in the Smoke. Wonder what their proposals are going to look like...?
NO!!!! It's meant to be a bit dingy, dangerous & dilapidated, how else are you meant to be creative. "I've suffered for my music & now it's your turn" as Neil Innes once wrote.
shame as it's got major significance in uk music history, maybe they'll rebuild it over the road like the Liverpudlians did with the cavern...... 'cos the yanks have zero history they'll never knock down c.b.g.b's though right?
all kicked off when turn key suddenly just closed up shop there a few years ago. it is slowly turning into another faceless place. starbucks and pizza hut and McD's will probaly take over due to massive high rents in that part of london.
Remains to be seen what the Crossrail thing just up the road will look like. They've been digging an enormous hole for years... Hope they keep Denmark St as it is - like to press my nose against the guitar shop windows.
I haven't been down there in years. My favourite was Andy's guitar shop where all the old battered vintage guitars used to be, I remember seeing a Maccaferri plastic guitar for sale for £50, they go for a hell of a lot more than that now....
