Bit more done today ... Got the fuel pump greased up and in - I had cleaned up the old one but picked up a new one offa eBay El cheapo so thought seeing as the old one was Brazilian better new Brazilian Finally found my studs for the exhaust, inlet and alternator pedestal So bolted that pedestal - then the inlet with its funky red manifold boots - heat exchangers and exhaust bolted up In between all that I added the tinware round the underside of the heads (between the heat exchangers) and also the tin that deflects at the rear in front of the exhaust... Also added the thermostat and rod fed between the heads... Splashed out on a new one from JK a while a go, not the original style it's the new type like a bit spring looking ... Starting to look like an engine now
be careful of the new thermostat i understand they fail closed and not open as the original ones You can get original ones http://www.deimosaircooled.com/products/engine/cooling
Id rather run without a thermostat than use one of the new style ones As matty said if it fails the flaps will be in the closed posistion and you will cook your engine
Yep the price of the original stuff is eye watering - hence the dangerous alternative... I will stick with it for the moment .. See if I can't get one somewhere along the way cheaper... Until then.. Was out in the feezer again today - finished off the heat exchangers didn't like the bits that came in the pack to join them together.... Had this from the previous set up which I liked for the other side So pulled the crappy bit off and mixed this up for the time being: Put the alternator and fan housing together spent ages jiggling it into to position then... Added all the tin I had left and went for a mock up shot:
Looking at those photies despite kurusting that front tin and painting it with VHT the rust is still coming through I foresee revisiting it with some tractor enamel at some point if there's anything left of it
Bit more done yesterday ... Fitted the hockey stick back into the gearbox. Did the clutch... The sparks leads and properly fitted the carb to the manifold.. Today I cleaned up the fuel tank straps and welded the back in and up - as they were seized on when I took the tank out. Cleaned up the welds, splash of fe123 then seam sealered... Underneath... Back of the cargo above the gearbox - same treatment Tomorrow I hope to spray some epoxy mastic, then the fuel tank and gearbox can go back in! At some point
Today test fitted the fuel tank, tapped down my repairs to make sure they are not fouling... I can see the strengthers through the gap - I guess once the foams added it'll be ok Prepped the tank and repairs I'd seam sealed - ready for a coat of epoxy mastic. Went to mix up the paint .. Picked up my mask and the filter fell off so no painting today Guess I need to get to the shoppies and get myself some foam pads and a decent mask
Popped out and got a new face mask - couldn't even get a whiff of the fumes Epoxy mastic to the repairs around the gearbox and fuel tank area.... Give it a couple of days and it might have touch dried I'll be able to start fitting all the bits now...
Not much of an update - being doing lots of little bits... building back up the gearbox, fuel tank... installed the brake lines and front calipers... Ordered new rear cylinders, shoes and drums so going to rebuild those next... couldn't shift the hubs even with the impact gun but my blow torch needs more gas so another trip to the shops is on the cards there before I get really Waiting on bush so I can fit the gear rod and put the gearbox in... Need to order some pipe for the return pipe on the fuel tank and buy some clips for the breather hose - ive only got 3.... ordered some replacement padding for the tank this stuff http://sealsdirect.co.uk/shopping.asp?intDepartmentId=1#14 Thats it
Got my rear brakes stuff from coolair they arrived yesterday Heres why I am replacing them: The rust on the break shows that its been like that for while - yuck - I think that the bus must have spent some of its life in a salt water loch The drums are in pretty bad shape too - pitted and rusty - on the whole I dont think they've totally worn out but they aren't good in my opinion... The shoes don't look too bad - I think I'll clean them up and keep them for spares ... Cleaned up, wirebrushed and painted the splash backs with FE123 - don't want that rust to spread to the new stuff Gave the spreader bar and bits a tickle too - and refitted the lot: Not forgetting the copper slip on the adjusters - did both sides - just need to find a missing bolt fit the pins and done! Oh I might need to put some brake fluid in... and bleed the system a few times Also fitted the gear rod - as the bush arrived today I guess tomorrow I can refit the gear lever ... nice
Lots of little jobs today ... Grommets for the hard brake lines, gear stick installed with quick shift, new clutch cable, cleaned up and painted brake and clutch pedal.. Installed dampners Stuck my neoprene 10mm tape to the fuel tank Couldn't quite remember where the original stuff was so just went by memory it's not to hard to change though Loads of other stuff but the cold froze my brain and I can't remember time.. Start new job in a couple of weeks so the race is on to get things done!
