Blowout before weekend!

  1. On the second leg of our hols last week (Thursday), we arrived at our cottage for the final four days so we could visit family in the area (Brecon beacons). Due to the fact the kids had eaten us out of house & motorhome we had to go shopping! On the way back we got this, just to add a bit of variety to an otherwise relaxing break!

So for the first time in seven years of latebay motoring I had to get the big yellow taxi home!
    How embarrassing!

Don't think one of those aerosols of air and gunge will work on that !

That’s a bit scary. Was the tyre old ??

  4. I wouldn't mind but I carry the gear to fix almost anything roadside .........except the spare!!!!

  5. Some of the breakdown companies insist on a serviceable spare and wouldn't cover that.
    Glad yours sorted you out

  7. We have cover through our bank & I told them the problem on initial contact.... We had left the kids at the cottage alone too so they couldn't really say no. If necessary I would have kipped in the van until Mrs ST's Aunty could assist with transport the next day

Does look like an old tyre , and the bit that popped was where the bus sat still on it for a few months.. tyres need to be driven or they go hard as the plasticisers migrate around a stationary tyre.. an old tyre lasts longer if used regularly or if the load is taken off it.

I would check the rest based on date code and the appearance of any cracks in the tread.

To be honest that tyre looks like it was knackered before blown the writings all gone and it looks perished I would have a look at the rest.

  10. and I can't see any maker's marks or tyre size on the cover, if it were me I would replace all tyres right now with van rated tyres.

  12. you were driving family around in a potential death trap.

you were lucky this time but next time. who knows.

When I bought my van 5 years ago, it had new tyres, which turned out to not be van rated, they showed bad cracking on the walls after only 3 years and I replaced them all with proper tyres and I check them regularly. Replaced my son's ones at the same time on the T25 especially as he drives family around.

  13. The tyres were only 12m old ..... load range D, is this wrong?

  14. D should be higher than required. Were they properly inflated?

  15. 33 psi which is between the 30-35 psi recommended range so ..... yes I should say so!
Can a guy not just get a puncture by accident? Also I had to drive on it to a layby as it happened in the middle of nowhere on a country lane Mid-Wales as it was just going dark but luckily only about 800 metres

Hijacking an old thread about tyres, I was wondering if this is knackered?

The valve is *******ing air out and I only discovered it too late after reversing out of the garage. I think it is, with all the cracking on side and between threads inhin addition to the valve issue.

Assuming it is and I change both rears to keep the threads balanced, would a winter tyre be the right choice to get more grip in fields at the expense of fuel/noise in road or is a standard commercial summer tyre OK?

    Thanks

That tyre you pictured is barely suitable. 94 load rating is low. Light commercial tyres are 104 rated. Max pressure 40psi is not good enough for a loaded van.
A proper van tyre will also have treads that are more like you want.

That looks old and baldy anyway. You can check the age via the dot code. I don’t think you Would have any noise issues with a winter tyre in an old bay.
