Concrete is not eternal , it powders , when we put acoustic vent in new tv studios which is pretty heavy we weren’t allowed to hang from concrete slabs without back plates for that reason . Concrete fish ponds leak without waterproofing . I’d say 100 odd years is pretty good really . Like most stuff profit takes over then it becomes jo public’s place to pick up the massive bills for of major rebuilds ,just like all our infrastructure we are too short sited or at least the people who take the money turn a blind eye . I just hope this gets sorted and no one gets hurt or killed .
I wonder if the original engineers claimed it would last two hundred years though? Probably said it would be good for 150 years and we’ve just been blasé I wonder how much Victorian engineering is presumed to be ok but in reality it’s going to give way immenently. I watched someone up the Blackpool Tower the other day on tv and wondered how the metal structure was fairing up to being on the coast for the last 125 years
actually the Firth of Forth road bridge built in 1964 was in danger of collapsing due to the single cable design its open again but only to buses and motorcyles - mind you the next door railway bridge is still solid since 189o
Blackpool Tower was designed to support fat Northern lasses full of chips and Bacardi, so should last for ages.
I was thinking...if anyone wanted to let a bomb off and cause havoc, we’ve got enough dodgy Victorian dams ...
Wouldn't surprise me if there was cracks in that concrete letting in water for a while leaving voids underneath . Then came the mega surge gets under concrete due to the pressure then all runs away sand castle style .
