Hmm once you’ve got historic RFD class are you then legally eligible to display pressed aluminium number plates? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
I think 'legally' black plates are only for vehicles up to 73/74 ....but I doubt the police would be too bothered about them on an old VW
Looks like anything 40 plus can. https://www.heritagecarinsurance.co...cles/can-i-display-black-silver-number-plate/
It can, but it won't look correct. It's like all these buses with number plates in the late Charles Wright font, drives me barmy and moreover...
yeah I don't believe any late bays would have had those style of plates. I doubt any prototypes did either as reflected were introduced in the 60's so any new vehicle would have had them fitted.
That's right - legal since the 40 year rolling historic qualification - so now up 1976. Was stuck at 1972 when it was the 25 year point . But a few people in our MG club have the black plates on 1979/80 MGBs.
my 66 mgb looks right with the black/silver plates. I got a pair of black/silver ones for my bay but they just didn't look right at all, so put the white and yellow ones back on. better to get one of those nice 'Air Cooled and Tax Free' stickers for the bay. and maybe 'MOT Exempt' one next year.
My 73 had some modern reflectives on. Never looked right. Found these online replicating 70s plastic stand out digits and correct font. Looks bang on. especially on a late bay. http://www.tippersvintageplates.co.uk/phdi/p1.nsf/supppages/tippers?opendocument&part=5
Got them from the Mrs for Christmas the year before last!! They are excellent quality and right on the money for period authenticity. I love 'em.
I get pulled up on mine every Mot. Just Velcro the yellow ones on top. Fortunately I only get an advisory slapped wrist Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I know, shame the little coupé version has never become popular in the same way. On a more serious note, those plates from Tippers are superb, I have a pair on my bay. Does anyone know where/if you can still get pressed plates in the SERCK font as below?
I replaced my flat plastic reflective plates with some of these a couple of years ago. Much nicer and more period correct I felt.
Better than a friend of mine.. called out a mobile car tuner to his MG Midget back in the late 80's and they tuned it up creatively. Idle was setup Ok ... balance .. when he floored it one of the SU butterflies went over 90 degrees and it jammed on full throttle... He and the car survived.
