FOR SALE BETTY, 1979 T2 VW CAMPER

  1. Betty is a 1979 VW Camper Van; she is a Devon Sundowner Bay Window in Mandarin Orange, with an elevated pop-up roof. She has 12 months MOT. Mechanically, she is very sound. We have only had her since January 2014, but have to part ways with her as our circumstances have changed.

Betty’s previous owner had her from 1996, for summer use, but she was off the road and garaged for the last 4 years before he sold her. She has had very little welding underneath, and has been garaged most of her life, and so she is virtually rust-free.

Prior to our owning her, the previous owner had the engine reconditioned (1,584 cc) and there is now only 54,900 on the clock. He also made other recent improvements : new cam belt, heat exchangers, fuel filter, fuel hose, fuel gauge sender, horn, wing mirrors, spark plugs, distributor cap, spare wheel cover and accelerator cable. He added a surfboard rear-view mirror.

Since January 2014, as Betty had barely been driven for 4 years, she has had a comprehensive service, and the following have been replaced : fan belt, air and vac hoses, fuel filter, points, brake master cylinder, brake cables, plates, shoes and pipes. A new Yuasa battery (760 amps) was fitted in January ( with 4 and 1/2 years warranty remaining with Halfords) . A main battery cut-off switch and key have been fitted to immobilise her when she is not in use. Also, a split-charge battery relay has been fitted to power-up the leisure battery for camping .

Betty has the original Devon drive-away tent/awning which provides extra living and sleeping space. There is a small free-standing gas cooker with grill and oven with a gas cylinder . There is also a Just Kampers winter cover and wax-oil kit. The interior fittings and upholstery are mainly original, with a sink unit, rock and roll bed, 2 single bunks, table, reversible double buddy seat, small wardrobe unit, storage spaces, and original patterned vinyl floor. Recently added have been newer high-backed front seats, a Sony CD Stereo with USB/MP3 input and remote control, and a small electric coolbox.

Our planned improvements to Betty’s living area had to be delayed, so there is plenty of scope for a new owner to develop projects and put his or her stamp on her.
