Best Jetting For Dual Dellorto 36s on 1.7L

  1. I have a 73 Westy that I am about to purchase a 1.7L type 4 engine off a friend to replaced the locked up motor that came with the bus. I have a set of 36mm Dellortos that I plan to run and I will probably buy a free flowing exhuast for it. Other than the carbs, I will probably leave it stock for now. The bus is an automatic and I was wondering what other people are running for jets with close to the same setup? I will probably buy a Petronix SVDA distributor as well and use the vacuum advance. Thank you for the help.

  2. You need to get it on a rolling road that deals in carb tuning, otherwise there's no way to set it up properly on load unless you buy a A/F meter and tap that into the exhaust then drive around with a bag full of jets, changing them until it's right.

  3. I'm not sure you'll see any benefits at all from any kind of upgrades on an automatic, other than to go from crap fuel consumption to crapper.

As OS said, you'll likely get close from rejetting by guess work but not bang on. I have 40's jetted on 2 engines which are for all intent and purpose identical yet jetted differently due to the figures and tuning on the rolling road.

Do your dells have vacuum ports? Mine do but apparently not all do
    :)

  4. I know of people who have run Dells on autos with some fantastic results in terms of general performance and fuel economy on the 1700 engine. One in particular springs to mind but I cant recall whether he had 36s or 40s. Ive yet to rolling road my 2 litre but ignore the dell book on venturi sizes and hang on for some good advise from someone with experience as I ended up fitting larger venturis than the engine could handle leaving me with lots of revs but very down on torque. I have no experience of what the 36s would have fitted but work out whats in there. As a rule of thumb and to get you going the mains should be around 4 to 4.5 times the venturi size. Im guesssing but your vets would be 28s or 30s. Id be surprised if anything larger would give good results.
DISCLAIMER - get lots of advise then post what youve got and what your thinking your set up should be and get feedback - it will keep the costs down and you might get something thats driveable.

  5. I have 36 dells on my 1700 and she runs pretty good , from memory i have 28 vents and 125 mains ,the correct tall airs(180) and i think a 55 idle , you also need the correct emulsion tubes . helps with decent manifolds not the generic 36-48 one size fits all type , decent linkage is a must and i would say a bellcrank type .... your right using a svda dizzy . The 1700 is a stonking revy engine

  6. I have a set of 40 Dellortos I could use as well, but I figured the smaller ones would best be suited for a 1700cc. The fuel injection on this bus is long gone, so that is why I figured the Dellortos would be best. As far as the auto trans, it was not my first choice but the bus I found is very clean and has never been modified, painted, or altered from being original. I know a lot of people are against it, but I have thought about changing it to a manual transmission just because I enjoy shifting.
Thank you for all the replys. Every bit of info helps.

  7. Ours is a 2L automatic with twin Dell'Orto DRLA36's. They were installed by the previous owner, who said "These were professionally set-up on a rolling road and tuned for maximum economy. This is a very worthwhile up-grade as these have provided a huge increase in power, with a massive improvement in driveability and fuel consumption."

Unfortunately I don't know what jets are in there.

  8. I'll be sending a set of 36's over to Italy shortly for rebuild then hooking them up to a 1700 or 1800 when I get them back. I'll let you know how they're jetted.
    :)

  9. I`m sure a man like you could refurb them ...its only a case of changing all the gaskets and setting them up

  10. Cheaper, quicker and easier to get someone to do it for me and they'll come back all shiny and new.

    Also, I can't be arsed
    :)

  11. Do you mind if I Ask a ball park figure

  12. Bargain then at 350 for a pair for refurb

  13. I tried the lemon juice thing once ,must admit I was expecting better results ..... My mock up set of dells could do with refurbing and selling on . I have a pucker heated ultrasonic cleaning bath and some ultrasonic carb cleaner .but it's way down my to do list
